Surely workers being expected to travel many miles to various jobs out of their working time is crazy?
Sometimes 150 mile(ish) round trip daily…

I am a fully employed relief driver, I drive (company vehicle which I keep permanently) from home to wherever I am required in the north west to basically pull them out of the mire at the drop of a hat and could travel 65 miles (example) from home, do a few hours and then be sent off somewhere else do maybe an ‘urgent’ drop for another branch or two then on home when done.
If when you get to where you’re sent you’re driving an HGV vehicle[/b], then legally the travelling time should already be booked as other work under the drivers hours and tachograph regulations.

I am after I get to work, have a company issued van to get me there from home.
Edit
I have to add, it’s not like this all the time, just when the situation arises. Mostly I am given a weeks posting to help with holidays/sickness etc but it happens quite a bit where I go from branch to branch.

No point worrying about the WTD if you’re not complying with the drivers tachograph regulations

Minefield innit :S
As far as I’m aware I am complying completely with tacho regs, it’s just all this travel time that I’m questioning tbh. If I’m honest the hours that I do will probably fall into line anyway, even with the long mileage I do before I start work but it’d be nice to know exactly where I stand.
Won’t affect me… I fall out of bed at 5, in the wagon at 5.15,and that includes cycling to work, picking up notes, keys and a brew.
But people can t use privat car for business if no special insurance and must some car registration for business, pay some extra tax.

Not really a minefield, the regulations make it clear and the court case clarified it.
I would disagree, you’re not complying completely with tacho regs as you aren’t declaring your traveling time, to pick up trucks which aren’t at base or your home. However provided your company doesn’t come under the scrutiny of the DVSA you’ll probably never have to worry about it.

Gonna have to have words I think and see what their view is. I’d hope to think these guys would have looked into this properly to be honest, the company is HUGE, and I really do mean massive. I know they wouldn’t do anything intentionally.
Cheers for the input everyone, it’s appreciated

If that’s regarding me then it’s a company vehicle, business insurance and I pay tax on it.
If Rep’s cars are not to have digicards in them to monitor driving hours - then f— 'em - don’t pay them, seeing as we don’t get paid for our own commutes with the crackdown on agency expenses etc.
In another direction though - some employers like stobarts WON’T give you the job if you live more than 45 minutes drive away from the depot you’ll be working out of… Go figure that!

Not a minefield at all. Your currently break the rules and regs by not recording driving time when driving your company van, so why bother with anything else?
Our Warehouse is only running with an Emergency Team. 3 Quarter are hired out to another Depot of our Firm. The Staff comes every Day from Heathrow and gets carried back too. They get paid that Time anyway. But if they wouldn’t get paid, then from now on they would.
