Cycle event

I have helped at cycle events many times, its important to understand that marshalls , officials and commissarres do not have the authority to stop or control traffic. They can be another pair of eyes and ears for the riders but that is all.

If racing is illegal on a public highway unless the road has been closed then how do these cyclists get away with doing it? If we were doing it in our cars the police would have a field day.

I think it’s specifically motor racing on the highway.

I “think” racing is illegal even on a bike. I “think” they get around it as they do it on a time trial basis rather than directly racing each other

Next time I see kids running beside each other, I’m gonna tell them it’s illegal

Used to do 25 mile time trial on a74 start just north of Carlisle in early 80s Sunday mornings n occasional Wednesday evenings, stick to mountain bike mostly these days,do lot of driving just done Durham didcot round trip last night, standards of driving, tolerance and patience are terrible

It’s no wonder there are such problems with the attitudes of most. Drivers and Cyclists need to show some respect for each other.
But NO. Its slag each other everytime when in actual fact usally both parties are as bad as each other. :unamused:

From what I witnessed yesterday all the trucks showed the cyclists a great deal of respect, following at a safe distance until they could pass or moving into the second lane to pass them, well before they actually got to them.

Threading the needle at full pelt onto a roundabout however and not giving a ■■■■ about anyone else is showing naff all respect to anyone.

I am pretty sure you are correct with that. Same theory as car road rallying.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the night time (yes I think it was about 10pm in complete darkness) ones that they do on the A49 between Prees Heath and Tern Hill. Was a couple of years ago I admit. I have also seen them early evening on the A483 Wrexham bypass, before rush hour(s) has finished, again some time ago. The very early Sunday morning ones I cannot necessarily see a problem with. The state of some of the roads around now with potholes that a mountain bike struggles to survive let alone a skinny road wheel I can see why they are attracted to any road that is in good nick.

I am a regular cyclist, mountain biking though, and I have asked “lycra people” about this. Their story was that it can become an obsession to get a personal best time on that route and I do not know if they were kidding me but they said one of the tactics was to purposely slow down a truck so that they could tuck right in behind and benefit from the drag for a while after it overtook them.

Definitely not for me though.

The A40 near Witney is used occasionally for “cycle events”; As someone else said it’s the marshalls that are the most annoying, frantically waving at traffic telling them to slow down. The cyclists aren’t a problem on the dual carriageway, it’s the prats with the flags and stopwatches that are the irritance.

few year’s back there use to be a bloke who rode his three wheeler racing bike on the a38 between Lichfield and burton. he caused chaos and didn’t seem to care less until he was rearended by a car and killed instantly. :open_mouth:

We do like a happy ending.

I was plodding along the other day and a condom head came zooming past me with one of those super light back wheels thats all one piece. Must of been doing 30mph+ downhill and he wasnt even looking at the road, practically had his head up his own arse to reduce drag.

WHY ARE RACE CYCLISTS ALLOWED ON THE ROAD LOL? Maybe I should dig my R1 track bike out; least the thing has a brake light and makes noise so people can hear it.
Also if you cause a cyclist to lose momentum they often rage a lot. It’s why a lot of them run red lights all they care about it maintaining momentum and clicking their silly smart watch once they reached their goal. Fudging hate them. Give a bad name for cyclists.

I stopped one on the A11 yesterday because I had priority over him at a roundabout.

Took my sweet time exiting, I think the poor sap wanted to ride under the side guards by how close he got, so I slowed down more to avoid a collision.

Oh how I guffawed

I still do a bit of cycling, used to be able to ride 200 miles in a day but can only do about 60 miles now. The new breed of cyclist wears shoes that clip into the pedals to reduce wasted energy with the foot wobbling about. They also turn very high gears which is ok while travelling fast but if you have to slow down then its difficult to pedal efficiently and regain momentum. Some of them don’t know that they have to share the roads as a velodrome is some thing else.
