Hiya,
When working for J & E. Transport back in the 50s, I occasionally had to drop
a few items designated for Teesside into Feather & Kents yard we didn’t do
that area when going through the big doors to the traffic office you was
advised to stick to the path between the freight awaiting forwarding to parts
further afield, the reason being a rather large mangy looking Alsatian dog that
although chained lived in a packing case and could just about reach to get his
teeth over the embarkation line, that mutt couldn’t half stretch that chain if
someone entering the place that was unknown to him, he used to frighten me
to death having brushed his nose across the back of my hand on my first visit,
needless to say I stayed well over to the left of the path after that.
thanks harry, long retired.
It’s a well established fact “H” that a dog is an excellent judge of character Cheers Dennis.
another doggy tale, whilst working at johnstons in the 70s john johnston came into the yard at bothel with his dog, a grumpy bull mastiff, so for everyones safety he put in the back of doc,s canvas backed land rover, and sternly said whatever you do yungnad dont walk past the land rover because if a shadow passes the dog will have it, next shout was here yungnad bring the cab brush, i by passed the land rover remembering johns warning, so later i returned the brush…the smell of dog breath the spray of dog spit and the deafening bark as it shot out of the canvas flap still lives with today, what a chuffing shock that was… thing is, i,ve still got a 10 second memory
Doggy Tail
Who remembers going into load Tennants Beer From Popeye Transport Armadale,Scotland.
Wen i was driving for Harris & Miners of Devon,Every time u had to park outside & walk in,
And see Alsatians tied to the Iron posts,& did they bark & strech there lead, the shunter wud say to you dont worry driver the dogs are harmless ,WAT
Ah thowt thou hed deed Hodge ! But there was niver 'owt in’t Whitehaven News eh ! So what does this new motor bring the fleet count up to Paul? Cheers Dennis.
I would not like to tramp around the UK in this. Imagine the driver asking his gaffer for incab heating, the gaffer goes into the office and comes out with a couple of blankets, ouch. PS it’s missings it’s headlights.

Hiya,
It’d be OK for tramping on day shift. One headlight is enough to light the over-
takers up and this model did have a decent heater with a lump of cardboard
on the grill to warm the water a bit, Howay Dennis where’s mi notes ?.

They are quite local to me although I don’t know much about them and have never had any dealings with them. By all accounts they were very good hauliers but they ran some very old kit, you always saw their Atkis about into the late 80’s and early 90’s although always well maintained. Some one I know went for an interview with them but he did not fancy tramping in a fifthteen year old Atki, he got a job at SJ Bargh instead, he got a newish 111 and probably better money, I believe he is still their today.
No idea where you have got your info from Ingmire but our last Atkis left the fleet in around '79 and sorry the oldest motors we ran were 10 and 12 year old immaculate Scanias, and I’m not sure who your pal was that came for an “interview” but he obviously wasn’t up to our standard ( probably SJB’s) and no we never lost any drivers to SJB’s it was the other way round, a number of ex SJB drivers came to us ! And we paid an hourly rate not a % of earnings which was always slanted in favour of the employer. And I say again we never had 15 year old Atkis up and down the road so where you have dreamt that up from I have no idea. Are you sure it wasn’t you that came for an “interview” Ingmire ? The only Ingmire I know of was Coward Bros. garage in Sedbergh and I got my first two “A” licences off Tommy Coward when SJB only had a 6 wheel Commer on a contract “A” licence from Libbys,oh! and they got booted out of Libbys along with Nelsons in 1990,Bewick Transport didn’t Cheers Bewick.

Pal of mine went there said they gave him a flat trailer and the sheets had more patches than a clowns trousers, every load they carried had wet reels, as for SJ Barth… fine establishment road Haulage, milk collection, warehousing and Scania franchise not bad for a fella who started with an old 6 wheeler
