Crap wages...

That’s awful , I’m currently on £10 per hour delivering underlay in a 3.5t and guaranteed 50hrs pay

Aren’t the jobs advertised on the Jobcentre Plus website normally the low paid crap jobs, as they know anybody with the relevant qualification or experience on the jobseekers program has to apply for them?

Not to mention that failure to apply can result in a cancelling of benefits.

Although if the company thinks it has a pool of unemployed HGV drivers to draw from it might be surprised, as I read in a article, in September last year there were about 500 hgv licence holder on Jobseekers allowance in the entire country, I doubt things have changed much since then.

What’s as bad is, employees on crap wages willing to give their employers 100% and take all the verbal crap off them.

Wheel Nut:
Hasn’t Tesco more or less farmed out all their transport to companies like Grasmere and Stobarts?

All my shags are quick.,

There seems to be a massive divide around the country where wages are concerned, we need 26 drivers ay my place in Avonmouth where 60 paid hours a week would gross you over £38,000.

Nobody ever turns up for an interview.

Where do i apply?

The problem is you’ll always have someone stupid enough to work for those wages.

I personally get £11.50 for my first 8 then £17.25 after that and I’m LGV 2 with ADR.

Theres loads of jobs available in Avonmouth take you’re pick.

People who make decisions on where to build these huge distribution sheds thought it was a good idea to build a load of them next to the city with the 4th highest average earnings in the UK, they then scratch their heads and wonder why they can’t get drivers for a tenner an hour.

PM me if you want details of the job I mentioned which by the way is one of the lower payers.

The trouble is there are still some companies in the Bristol area that pay crap wages and wonder why they’re always looking for drivers .

Seen a genuine advert today (on the gaffers desk [emoji57]) for class 1 @ £7.50hr from a well known agency. Seriously? [emoji20]

Same here in Rugby. You’ve got DIRFT, Crick, Magna Park, Swift Valley all local and right by a train line which means London is 50 minutes away and Milton Keynes is only 30 minutes.

The result is that my little town is now some form of commuter hub and house prices have grown massively so wages have had to increase or they just won’t retain anyone.

There are people who travel 90 minutes each way to do day work because the hourly rates make it worth it after fuel expenses and so on

How about this then?

If you don’t live near a major population centre and/or near the confluence of major motorways then you’re options are numbered.

Once upon a time we had a large manufacturing economy spread around the country with lots of small to medium sized hauliers to service it, we now have almost 80% of our economy based on the service sector we sell considerably more than we make hence the continued move to large distribution hubs Avonmouth where I work being a typical example, where those employers who don’t pay accordingly are unable to recruit/retain drivers.

Also these companies are predominately own account that have always paid a premium anyway, go further away from these areas and the demand for drivers tails off then so does the pay, the only thing a haulier has to increase the already tiny profit margins is to pay as little as possible, the only way to make any money is to specialise
or to become very large and run the trucks day and night.

If you’re doing the job anywhere for less than £10 an hour then there is little point spending £2500 on qualifying for a job when you can earn similar money for driving a van, or move to where the money is.

£9.33 an hour, I don’t know what the pay is like in north Wales is that below or above the average ?

Also if you’re 4 days off are in one complete pay week, you only get 3 days pay, not so good.

It’s nights too, shocking

Quotes a salary not hourly so surely same every week? I’m paid same salary for 28 day month as for 31 day.

Salary means 448 per week… averaged over 3.5 days a week at 12 hours, that is £10.66 per hour. Plus overtime as well.

I have seen worse, but not the best for nights…
