I think I was only 23 or 24 when that pic of me on the pumps was taken, I had just come in from Ramsgate with V.W’s on. I can’t remember all the drivers Pete Oldknow also known as Pete the beard, John Frankton,Joe Lomas Tommy Parks. Happy days.

The S80 your dad got was the first Foden we had with the metal cab it was painted blue and white in Roots colours. After I left they moved to Weedon. the bloke your thinking of may have been Alf Fletcher he lived near Daventry. When I was doing middle east I parked my truck in Weedon depot and stayed at Alf’s one night on my way down to Dover.

's

Alf Fletcher I knew, he was the night ferry man from the jag at BRS John Frankton was a good family friend, I used to play cards with him on a sunday lunch at the Baginton Legion.

Hi Dieseldogsix
Alf used to drive a Foden wagon & drag for years at Latham’s. Those were the days you had to have a second mate. Do you know if he is still around. He was a big noisy bugger but a great guy he would do anything for you.

Not sure if Alf is still around, i’ll ask , your right about him being noisey, you knew when he was around.

Hi lads
Pop you mentioned was killed taking my Guy Big J from Preston depot back to Cov. and he told me that sat. morning he didn’t want the wagon as it was to big and fast. Michael Latham rang me sat. night and told me about Pop. I believe he lost control and hit a house near Castle Brom. No pics of the Guy, it had a 180 ■■■■■■■ and a high speed diff. and would do 70+mph TBE 953H I think was reg.

Lathams had a few Fodens before Stan Druse started at Lathams I think he was still with Furness & Parker.

Thanks for the info, for some reason I thought it was an Atki, it was abit further north than Castle Brom, not far from where the 416 crosses the Chester Rd, I saw the house a couple of days later, completly demolished

Dieseldogsix do you remember the name of the chap who drove for BRS car transport he had a old AEC 5 car artic he keep it immaculate use to park it at dunsmore ave off chace ave willenhall ,BRS wanted to change it but he wouldn’t let them ran it years iam sure he died in a accident in it ,but i might be wrong cause iam sure his name was popper preece

Poppa Preece, did drive an AEC Mercury artic 5 car at BRS (Furness & Parker) as it was called then before it changed the name to Cartransport (BRS) in 1968 iirc, the story my Dad told me at the time was that Poppa had gone to Southampton Docks when he got there he realised the cars were for Liverpool Docks, instead of returning to Coventry, he went straight through to Liverpool, when the union found out, they went nuts, and in the following arguments, he was supposed to have threatened the shop steward, anyway he left and went to Lathams, and the rest is history, his son, who lives by my Brother came over to move some beds for me when I moved out to Canada 3 years ago.

The only other bloke I remember driving An AEC and I’m talking about before the Ergo cabs, was Tommy Ward.

that don,t half look my Dad driving that commer, just cant zoom in enough

It’s funny you should say that foden, because my nefew in the USA, cleaned that video up, and as it goes past, it looks like my brother in the passenger seat, but it could be imagination, I don’t recognise the reg either, the first 10 they had were TJF 901 to 910, the next lot were 487 DRY and so on, the DRY’s had the mouth organ grill like that one but the original ones were the ones with what I call the wings on the grill just under the windscreen, I think Wheel Nut posted it some time back, great bit of history.

Altury incase your wondering who my Dad was his name was Reg Jones, we lived in the council house on the corner of Rowley Rd, Baginton., my mum was the lollipop lady.

There is a Alf Fletcher who lives in Rugby, who is a noisey git, could it be the same one, did a bit of agency work with him, came from Lancashire orignly?

Dieseldogsix my brother thinks its Joe Lomas driving the commer :open_mouth:

Currently visiting the old man in the USA and finally found this old snap taken at Dunlop, Holbrook Lane, in the spring of 1969. He was on nights and as I was a 5 year old, obsessed with Guy Warriors and their coloured headress badge, he took this pic for me. It was waiting for the night driver to clock in and take spares down to Dunlop at Heathrow. Thing was, my old man was so keen to impress me, he nipped into the cab (so not locked then) and half inched the steering wheel centre badge which I’ve still got!

The driver must’ve thought, blimey where’s that gone

Pre 1963 and nice Coventry reg plate too ‘DU’

A Freddie’s MAN - nice memory of Bayton Rd and the lads. Miss me Xmas bottle of Bells!
