Containers, what do I need to know?

Quite a few say “open doors before backing onto a bay” but in my experience, I’d back onto the bay, they’d break the seal and crack the doors, then I’d pull forward an open the doors properly and then back onto the bay.

If you can get some rope, it can come in handy for tying doors open, a lot of boxes have done a few jobs and are knackered, so there’s nothing to hold them open anymore.

Don’t know if anyone knows what spec. the units are at Unitruc? Forgot to ask when I was there. Do i need to dig out my cooker or not?

if you have a heavy 20’ft box on and it wont slide out from closed position, downhill helps alot,
if the pins wont go in dump the air out of the trailer and they will go in, if not, jump back in cab and give it a little tug and they will go in,

Carry a hammer and a piece of pipe they are both useful for the doors and for knocking the pins in when they don’t go back on their own. When sliding the skelly don’t forget to fold the rear twistlocks in.If you get a garment box nick a couple of the ropes that are hanging down, they are handy for fastening the doors back. If you have a twenty foot box that weighs more eight or nine ton line it up to the bay before you shorten the chassis, as you shorten it the weight is moved back over the skelly wheels and off the unit drive wheels and it can be an absolute ■■■■■■■ to turn as all the drive wheels will do is spin. When you have a twenty foot box on and you are overtaking remember there is ten foot of trailer at the back of the box.
Always check empties when you pick them up to see if they are fit for purpose most aren’t checked when they are put in the stack and drivers don’t report them as damaged, it could also be a garment box. It pays to carry a can of spray paint to cover any unwanted hazardous stickers. Check the paper work if loading scrap metal as some want the doors facing forwards, some backwards.
When loading don’t put the seal on until you’ve weighed out. Can’t think of any thing else at the moment so enjoy I like the job but it’s not everybody’s cup of tea.

Yes pal

Are you doing days or nights ?

i wanted nights, but got days with first refusal on the first night shift to come up

no-one mentioned soft tops. When I did boxies years ago now mind, by the exit gate there used to be an inspection gantry. its always worth the run up just to make sure the tops ok mind it never hurts to make sure the top on any box is solid. It’s been know to open the doors and find a bloody hole in the roof where water’s ■■■■■■ in. you sign for the box your responsible for what you can see .

There is an option to veiw the roof on the machine on the way out
