I think Peter explained everything really well, but like he also pointed out, it really isn’t that straight forward and can depend on many factors. Where in the country are you, as that could be a good or bad thing? It would be better if you lived very close to a major city like London. Birmingham, Manchester etc than in a small village in the middle of Exmoor!
I reckon if you have this feeling that you want to become a trucker, then go for it! If you don’t, you will look back in 20 years time and think, “what if…?” Like Peter also said, you will get work as long as you don’t just sit back with your new licence and expect employers to come to you.

LJ.
That’s what I did I didn’t want to look back and think what if!
LJ is right you cannot just gain your licence and hope to get work you have to really put yourself out there a and be prepared to do the crappy jobs no one else wants to! The more you say yes to agencies the more work they will throw your way.
Some agencies do want the 2 year experience but others have new driver policies; out of 10 agencies I went to only 2 wanted experience! Be ready to print lots of cover letters & cv’s and getting round plenty of agencies! I don’t have a week without work and I’ve only had my licences just over a year! I am lucky that my location is right next to Birmingham and next to the copious amounts of RDC’s & Depots at Tamworth & Lichfield.
Have you thought of maybe phoning around few local firms, explain situation, and find out if they would be willing to give you a go if a job was to come up after you get your class 2?
Truswell, A Davies, Langdons, all at Dodworth run class 2 vehicles. Ken Mallinson have recently gone into a pallet network so I expect they’ve had to put some more rigids on the road?

Good luck if decide to go for it!
This is good advice, I would substitute phoning with visiting however

Thanks, I’ll do that as soon as I’ve got the money together for the training and I’m almost ready to go for it. How long does the training usually take, I was thinking of doing it in the summer holidays or possibly Easter if I get the money together faster.
If all goes to plan and you pass your theory tests straight away, then you should have your CAT C 7 weeks from date of medical and your CE 4 weeks later if you go for it.
It can be quicker, but this is a realistic timescale.
Best tip I can give is never ask about getting a lorry licenes on a truck blog it will just degenerate into a never ending spat about money .
One other positive about getting a lorry licenes witch is often over looked on here is its not just general haulage jobs that it can doors too.
So many company’s need people with lgv hgv’s as part of doing another job. Long term I’m hoping to get I to septic tank emptying. It’s dirty smelly work. But I know guys getting paid £10 an hour doing it. Its 7am till 4 or 5 pm witch isn’t bad hours, so can take home 450 no probs.
There’s loads of other jobs witch having a truck licenes can put you in the running for. Where with out one you could’nt even be considered. I always say if you’ve got the money spare and can still pay there bills after paying for the licenes then it’s not a bad skill to obtains.

yep iv heard guys getting 12 tp 15 in some area. Even better reson to get a license. There’s not many other places blue collar guys can get this kind of money. You will never get 15 an hour it stacking shelfs.
I like said there more than just general haulage company’s that have a use for people with lorry tags.

Sometimes being a LGV driver can go against you as put on these pages before some companies think that drivers are fat lazy folk who will not work so they will not consider you for any other work.

Even the NHS needs lorry drives.
You’re right. I can’t think of very many industries where a lorry ain’t involved somewhere
That’s true. I think it sounds like it’s worth the investment, I love driving long distance and like the ideal of not having to constantly deal with people and office politics anymore, it does my head in. I think I will go for it once I have saved the money, I’ll just have to be tenacious to get my foot in the door by the sounds of it.

Christmas is a good time to get that all important expirance. I only passed in June i havent started looking for work yet as im still gainfully employed for the moment but the agency have called me today asking if I’m free to drive for them. So chances for first time drivers do happen. Dispite what some say. I found out Royal Mail is great place for first time drivers as thay have no 2 year expirance rule. Hopefully this won’t chance due to it being sold off.
The another great offen over looked job involving getting the HGV licence is it makes you employable to drive the big tractors pulling the crops to and from the fields with the big trailers. You can’t do that job with out the HGV licene. As the the trailer and tractors combined weight is over 3,5 ton so all those guys are HGV trained.
If getting away from people is what your needing right now then working in the tractors is about as far from dealing with people as you can get. No taco’s to ■■■■ about with ither.
Although in fairness it’s properly harder to get a job doing this. Most tractor owners are contractors too all the local farms. Would help to know someone who dose farming work.
Gess working as a farm hand with the polish migrates to start with would be the best way to get to know the farmers and owners of the tractors and let them know you got HGV and can move the tractors if thay need you too. Would have to prove to them your alrite and are going play a fair game with them. I know a lot of farmers and thay can come over as being a strange breed. Will take along time to win them over. Anyway these are the some of the lines of work people seem to forget about.
Oh I don’t know if working as a farm hand would be for me but the tractor thing is something to bare in mind. I’m sure if I harass the ■■■■ out of agencies and call around companies I should eventually pick something up.
You know the driving schools, do they tend to be whole days out learning at a time? I’m trying to work out when I can fit the lessons in as it looks like it will have to be school holidays which is a bit of a pain.

Think thay tend to do ither one on one training witch for me was 4 hours in the morning or 4 hours in the afternoon or its two on one training witch for me again was start at 8am finish at 4pm so that way was all day.
Pros and cons to both training methods. Getting the training right is all down to finding a trainer who you get on with. This more than anything to me is what’s important when looking for a trainer.
