You’ve made a tidy job of the rebuild Dan! I recall when I was running my D1000 up and down to London in 1969 a lad I knew from West ■■■■■■■ called Rodney got a new DENNIS artic when he worked for H & L Haulage of Workington, not just sure what it was called, would it have been MAX ? IIRC it had the same ■■■■■■■ V8 as my D1000 so I would think it would have been 28 ton GVW,I don’t know what box or axle it had though?.In 1970 Rod left H & L and started on a new ERF 4 wheeler for my old marra Harry Thompson from Cockermouth when he got his second motor, they ran out of Smith Brothers Whitehaven.Hows that for memory !! Cheers Dennis :unamused:

Dennis when I saw the title of this thread I thought the Leatherhead Lecturer had knocked you out of your tree   but I have read the thread :unamused:
cheers Johnnie

The artic would have been a Dennis MAXIM with the V8 ■■■■■■■ engine. There were quite a few around the South East, but then that was their home ground of course. Whitbread brewery were big Dennis users, as were Charringtons coal. The ones I encountered were the earlier Pax’s which had BMC 5.1 engines and (I think) BMC axles like the Albion Claymore also used. They were a well built chassis and I guess more expensive than the competition, ie Bedford, Commer, BMC and Bedford etc which, with a smaller after sales backup, probably did for them finally in the commercial sector. The municipal side did well of course.

Pete.

Oops, double post!

Pete.

There is a tnuk member who I think uses a picture of a maxim as there avatar or what ever it’s called .

I know this is an old thread but I’ve bought a 1980 delta cab and some chassis bits ,I’ve got a 1970 pax v and a 1972 DB15.5 ,if anyone has any Dennis parts new or second hand I would be interested ,thanks Dan.

Have you tried getting some therapy Dan■■? Cheers Dennis.

He lives up in the hills Dennis so he needs a hobby. I did a fair bit on Dennis trucks but nothing that modern, I remember going out to a Pax with fuel problems which had been retro-fitted with a Gardner 4LW (originally it had a 5.1 BMC engine) and whoever fitted it had cut a hole in the engine cowling to let the crankcase breather poke through! Bet that was lovely in the cab after a few miles, maybe they provided the driver with a gas mask?

Pete.

Must have been revenge on the crew at the time, wouldn’t it actually have been easier to fit the breather the other way up?

Maybe the owners thought it was preferable to fill the cab with fumes and oil rather than risk a tug for chucking it all over the highway? :unamused:

It was the ‘tin can’ type breather mounted on the cylinder head, about half of it was showing in the cab. Dennis actually offered the Gardner as an option so I assume that they would have had a different cowling? I cant now recall the engine problem only that I had to bleed the system, the engine had only been installed a week or so before. Probably just a loose pipe, we (being a BMC agent) had little to do with Gardners. That all changed for me when I moved jobs and then had 40 of the blasted things!!!

I’ve been trying to do a little research into the company that produces Dennis trucks - you know, dustcarts, fire engines, buses etc.

But I’m confused!! Just down the road from us in Warwick is Dennis Eagle, who make dustcarts and recycling refuse wagons. They have their own chassis (the Elite?), or can make bodies to fit other manufacturers chassis.

Then I found John Dennis in Guildford, who make the fire engines, either on their own chassis or those of other manufacturers. They make the Dennis Sabre and Dennis Dagger. They appear to be a separate company altogether.

Finally I found Alexander Dennis in Falkirk who make the buses, but they also seem to be involved in Fire appliance manufacture, though it is not apparent whether they have anything to do with John Dennis. They make the Enviro, Dart, Pointer, Trident chassis, R Series chassis, and Javelin chassis

So each of these companies (not sure if there are any others) are all producing vehicles with the brand name ‘Dennis’, but they are not the same company. Were they ever??

Does anyone know why Dennis is split in this way, and whether the vehicles produced by each company are actually related in anyway (e.g. common chassis, engines, technologies, sales/servicing networks etc)■■

It would appear that these are all British companies, but I believe they are relatively small.

Any thoughts??

Have you read this punchy dan?  :open_mouth: :open_mouth:  :unamused:

Yes m8 thanks ,I’ve a DB 15.5 too although it’s actually a 13 ton gross .

Many years ago, late 80’s I think, we went to watch the London-Brighton Veteran Car Run and we parked in a lay-bye on the route. Another chap pulled in and we got chatting, he was there to see the Dennis car that was entered and was being driven by one of the Dennis family who this guy had worked for as a test driver for many years. He spoke highly of them, a proper family run company at that time before they eventually sold it off.

Pete.

I’ve not seen 2 dennis lorries the same yet ,people think because they look the same or very very similar they are .

Export Dennis heavy. Robert

not my picture ,it looks better here than when they painted in red ,a great looking example one id happily drive today.
