Masks are most useful for stopping virus or whatever from being expelled by someone, rather than preventing it being breathed in. It does a little of the latter, but mostly the former. Remembering that we can have asymptomatic carriers it is best to stop any infection getting out from us.
Someone else wearing a mask doesnt help if you are breathing bugs onto surfaces etc for them to pick up. I do agree on empty streets there isnt much point in mask wearing, but really struggle to see what is in any way wrong, or upsetting about it?
It isnt really about protecting your own self, but if you are infected, maybe without knowing, you can be spreading the virus. For such a little inconvenience (for most of us) why not? Risk someone elses health just so we have the pleasure of seeing your marvelous profile? No thanks.

May 2020 he tweeted that a second Covid wave was mathematically implausible.
Before that, in April he said “there is nothing especially virulent or frightening about covid 19 … it’ll all fade away … Just a common & garden virus, to which the world overreacted.”
