Companies using drivers for their own work

He works in transport and finishes 2 hours late

Get a grip.

Ok I’ve been driving lorries since 1981. Never once have I loaded my own lorry. Absolutely never.

What sector? How about unloading or securing?

So have I and I’ve never been a jobsworth. Absolutely never. If I’d refused to strip tilts in the deserts of the Arabian Gulf, I’d have still been driving fridges up and down the M2. Jobsworths don’t get the more interesting work.

Same in teaching: it’s the chap who’s prepared to double up classes in the absence of a colleague who ends up with the deputy headship. It’s the same the workforce over: jobsworths end up going nowhere.

Times have changed since 1981. How many jobs have you had?

Which is quite dangerous as they often end up managers or even worse middle management these days. S hit at their job yet end up telling others how to do theirs

I have not found a bit of pallet shifting to be beyond my physical nor mental capabilities.
Those who are “above” a bit of work often get fat or end up dozing during the day and expending time and money on gym memberships in their time off.

You probably picked on the worst driver. I’m a level 3 running coach. I’ve ran self supported from John o groat’s to lands end have won 6 marathons in my time just currently making a resin filled table to celebrate my 52 half marathons in 52 weeks medals I’ve run down central America and ran across Sweden in 3 days 2 years ago. I coach national level athletes in my spare time. I base run off aerobic development for 8 weeks move to strength work for 8 weeks . I can match pretty much beat every athlete under 30 years old over 5k 10k and half marathon . A few years ago when I was 53 I was ranked 17th in the UK over 50k and the oldest person to attain that. In my cab I have a sandbag for strength training and a squat magic to work whilst getting tipped. About an hour ago I came back from the Malvern hills after coaching 8 athletes. I am now 62 years old and had my only race this year cancelled in Moldova . My next race is in China next year. Be careful who you pick on. I certainly am not a fat overweight cab sitting trucker.

That certainly wasn’t the case in education until very recently, when management posts began to be filled by geeks with certificates who don’t know one end of a child from the other. Heads were appointed because they were good teachers and good at keeping an institution realistically running etc., so your point is a bit of a red herring.

Then you, of all people, will understand about commitment and teamwork: both essential to being a successful part of any transport operation.

Perhaps I could have worded it better

I also understand that doing someone else’s job then becomes mine. Because it’s just never challenged. You get yourself on that forklift sunshine and fill your boots. By the way don’t forget to polish your diesel tank on your break mate

5 jobs in total in transport

I also understand that teamwork is for a team. I don’t work for 2 companies. I work for one

Stripping tilts in the Arabian gulf is What’s expected in those countries . We came out of the dark ages many years ago. And I keep seeing references to teaching in posts. People who get the head posts are the ones who have worked for free. The police do a lot of work for the Queen as it was put. Meaning overtime without pay. It’s a pity our politicians don’t do the same thing

And who said you were?
But many certainly are.

Many are Walts too.

Never mentioned doing someone else’s job. Never displaced a fork lift driver. Never polished a diesel tank: I used to chop garlic on it whilst preparing camion stew down down the TIR trail.

Precisely my point: it’s part of the job, not ‘secondary employment creep’!
