Wait till you see the hill they had to get up to then get onto the moor, It zig zags up the side of the hill.
Part 2 Edenfield to Scout Moor Quarry Construction Base
Three sections made one complete turbine tower.
This consisted of one base section section 16 metres long and 24 tons and two 22 metre sections at 55 tons.

Leaving Edenfield along the A680 through Bridge Mills

Down through the dip at Bridge Mills on the A680 Rochdale Road

Onward to Scout Moor on the A680

Under police ■■■■■■ the convoy takes up all the road

A steady climb up Rochdale Road

The convoy prepares to turn on to the quarry road

Sharp left and up to Scout Moor

Once off the A680 its the start of the climb up to Scout Moor

Hairpin bends are the order of the day as the convoy heads up to Scout Moor

A tight turn and grounded so lets get that trailer generator started

Onwards and upwards

Steady progress up the steep hill towards the next hairpin bend

The final hairpin in a cloud of dust

Great views and were almost at the top of the hill

After the hard climb the convoy arrives at the construction base

A right turn and nearly there

Time to order dinner the convoy ■■■■■■ driver takes the order for fish and chips five times from the chippy down in Edenfield

The drivers prepare to unhitch the trailers for the shunter to take the tower sections the rest of the way

Mission accomplished! Now it’s down to the shunter now to take the trailers up to the Turbine base pads on the moors
Next ‘Up on to the moor’

Driving those must be a interesting job
Part 3 ‘Up on to the Moor’
As one complete wind turbine is delivered to the site compound it was then transported up on to the moor in sections by the shunter
along the eight miles of access roads built for the construction of the wind farm.

Scout Moor quarry was used as the storage compound during construction

Getting ready to roll thats a turbine blade on the right

A few last checks before the off

Up on to the moor 450 metres above sea level

Heading east over Scout Moor

With the uneven road surface ground clearence is as at the bare minimum

Middle tower section is 55 tons and 22 metres in length

Narrow roads high up on Scout Moor

8 miles of road like this across the moor had to be built to gain access to all 26 turbine locations

Onwards and eastwards to the turbine base pad

A nacelle is seen here enroute this houses the generator and gearbox on top of each finished tower

Convoy heads east over the bridge towards the construction site

The size of the completed turbine towers is put into perspective along side the Colletts lowloader

Down the steep hill towards Turbine pad No 26

The very steepness of this hill does not come across in the picture

Almost there

Centre tower section arrives on site

After its long journey from Germany the tower section is prepared for unloading at Turbine pad No 26
Thank you all for your comments Paul ![]()

Part 4 Unloading on site at Scoutmoor

Reversing up the hill

Banksman in radio contact with the driver

Almost in position

Just a few more feet

In position and ready to unload

Cranes move in ready to lift

Ground crew attach the lifting cables

With the cranes in position and cables arrached the lift begins

Up and away

55 ton 22 metre centre section at Tubine No 8

Preparing to unload at Turbine No 8

The remote location high on Scout Moor

Ground crew attach lifting cables

High on the moor with Ramsbottom down in the valley below

Another tower section delivered and Colletts lowloader is on its way to fetch another section

Turbine hub arrives on site

Hub is unloaded

Above and below

Excellent photographs, I have just had a look out of the widow but the cloud’s pretty low so they are not visible. Coming into Rochdale and heading towards Sandbrook park makes you realise how vast these structures in the distance are. Thanks for sharing!
Part 5 The 40 metre blades arrive on site.

8 tons and 40 metres long a turbine blade heading to Scout Moor on the M66

Convoy of three blades heads north on the M66

Convoy passing through Edenfield

Coming through down Market Street Edenfield

With the road closed to oncoming traffic the convoy passes through the village in no time

Edenfield village centre (good chippy down on the right)

Convoy bears left at the roundabout on to the A680

Passing through the centre of Edenfield

On to the A680

8 tons and 40 metres long!

The 40 metre turbine blade dwarfs the cottages as it passes through Edenfield on Rochdale Road.

On to the A680 Rochdale Road

Away up on the A680 Rochdale Road towards ‘Owd Betts’

Move over coming through

Up on to the moor

Long loads and tight turns

Rear steersman takes control

Rear steer is the order of the day on these narrow roads up on the moors

Approching Turbine No 13 construction site high up on Scout Moor

One more right turn and we are there

Mirror! Signal! Manoeuvre!

Life made easy with the rear steer trailer around those tight turns

Colletts reer steersman makes it look like a piece of cake

Almost there

Arrival at Turbine Pad No 13 and it’s time to unload
Next ‘Unloading of the 40 metre blades’.

No not really Colletts have used a couple of the above images on their own 2009 calendar but i just documented the construction of Scout Moor Wind Farm for the Geograph web site.
Peel Holdings, who built and own Scout Moor wind farm, sent me on a health and safety course which gave me unlimited access to the construction site so long as i wore my hard hat.
I must mention Colletts who were a great help as they would always let me know by phone of the delivery times on the day.
As all their vehicles have satellite tracking it allowed me to be in the right place at the right time as i only live near by.
Still a quite few pictures to come and thank you for all your comments and messages. ![]()
