Does anybody remember the Volvo Eurotrotter. I think it was based on the F10 /F12 daycab with a pod on the top. Max cube drawbars sometimes had them. I have only seen one in real life but plenty pictures of others.
yeah i remember them bowkers and croomes had quite a large fleet of em between them.when i was a kid id go on runs with my next door neigbour in a guy big 4j that had a coffin sleeper it was brown and cream and owned by a guy called burt swift from fillongley those were the days
Jesus, a BigJ with a sleeper! You been spoiled Carl! When I worked for Dunlop, they used to go over to Germany in BigJ day cabs
had to drive with windows down though heater blew sauna temperatures constantly
There was a firm in Troon, Smiths they did a lot of work for Hyster out of Irvine. They ran Volvos and allegedly they had an F86 with an F10 engine (275 )in it as seed vehicle. With Volvo having a plant in Irvine it was easy for them to keep an eye on it.
Apparently it went like the proverbial off a shovel fully loaded at 32 tons
I drove a Guy Big j with i think a coffin made by Jennings?
If i remember correctly it had a 180 Gardner and a David Brown gearbox.
I must have been about 21 and thought i was king of the road.
I dont remember any coffin cabs …but I’m sure I heard one sneeze once
What was the difference between the Guy Big J and the Big J 4 T ?
I’m sure I remember this truck.
Cheers .
Niall
Mal:
I love to see trucks like that, where somebody has modded them personally, it makes a change from the bland design of the manufactureres!
did you not see inside my cab mal.
I’ve removed the passenger seat and fitted a chest of drawers (lightweight plastic bought on special from macro)
next job to build a tv unit and then…
No Sean, I didnt get to see the inside. Fair play to you though mate, I like the idea!
Niall, I think the 4 stands for the wheels, e.g. 4 wheeler or 2 axle, because they had a Big J6 as well I think, they were the 3 axle obviously. What the T stands for might well be Tractor?
niall, that scanny was for sale recently, and also graham cordiners old scania conversion is for sale.

Well you are welcome into my cab anytime mal (but I’d watch yourself if its a friday and I’ve been out all week )
I havn’t gone down the cabinet makers route…just bunge’ed it all in
I’ll buy you a tea next time our paths cross (if you can find your way out of the eurostar try tying a piece of string to the door and your big toe to find the exit after a night out)
I’ll hold you to that tea mate! and steer well clear on a Friday! Bunging it all in sounds about my style as well mate, so I wont critisize! The Eurostar is looming, just got the word from the gaffer that the SA needs a rest (oil pressures low now) might be next week.
These coffin cabs still exist today dont they?.
They took the idea and renamed them Scania P cabs didnt they?.
The only difference is Jammy - they have filled the rivets and painted them !!
In the 70’ when the Middle East thing was in full swing CM did a feature running with BRS when they had that Overland Iran service and at least one of the units was a day cabbed Crusader. I also recall a picture of a holding compound down that way that showed a day cabbed Big J and an Atki Silver Knight, which was the model before the Borderer !! CM reported a German driver remarking " no wonder you won the war , you’ve got to be tough to drive these". Around that time a firm at Bolton was advertising a matress in a frame that was stored against the cab headlining when not in use, the unit featured in that was a Big J as well. It’s 40 years since that wagon was introduced and by all accounts the name stems from when Guy were owned by Jaguar ie: Big Jaguar. I sat in a 6 legger in 68 when I was12 it had a tiny handbrake down the right side of the seat. An outfit from the Rotherham area Called Brian Watt used to run day cabbed trailing axle 6 leggers to Eurpe possibly the Eastern side. In 69 they became dealers/importers for Bussing units before that firm was taken over by MAN around 70/71 and they disappeared off the scene.[/i]

LMAO!
Cheers Boden, you just made my day!
Thanks boden, a nice memory from the past.
Keep em coming mate !!
Cheers,
Niall.
Big Js and Crusaders, does anyone remember the ERF Continental that used a very similar Motor Panels cab and came out shortly before the B Series? Don’t know how many they sold but they were one of the rarest sightings on the road, I think I’ve only ever seen about three of them. Does anyone know of any survivors?
