Come to think of it, when carrying Adr with orange plates marked up, foreign authorities never wanted to see my Adr licence.

having a republic of ireland (eu licence) there is no such thing as a paper counterpart so never get asked for it
i have used my digicard twice in renting a car and only thing that was said “never seen them licences before are they new”
I go to Ireland quite a lot and hire cars and never been asked for paper part.
I see what people are saying about keeping it but as of June its a useless bit of paper.
I found the new site quite useful all your dates for renewal are clearly displayed as are all the types you can drive.
I also believe the cost of renewing the license is going down because of this as well so thats got to be a good thing and
that includes digi cards. The rate things are going you wont have the card next it will be on your phone. 
Hire companies are only worried if you have a valid licence, over 12 points you don’t (sometimes) - simples.
