Cb radios

Ken you’ll probably know the answer I already suspect; I regularly hear guys using ham radio callsigns on the cb claiming to be from the USA or southern Spain.mi hear them clear as a bell, are they genuine or just full of crap?

There are “Freebanders” who use 27 MHz as a Ham band using (sort of) Ham protocols and operating procedures.

The CBers use a callsign of (Numbers)(letters)(numbers). The first numbers are “Division” aka country. The letters are “club” and the last numbers are the individual.

At this part of the sunspot cycle, the high HF bands are booming. Australia comes in, in the morning. America in the afternoon/evening.
Just been listening to the Ten metre Ham band (28.0-29.7 MHz) The SSB portion is RAMMED. On the FM bit, the New York repeater is end stop on my mobile setup (29.620 MHz)
There is an Australian net on 28.72 USB at 1100 hrs. For those capable, listen out
Of course on both CB and Ten Metres, Olga is everywhere!! :imp: :imp:

And about as welcome as the AIDS virus at a swingers party. I’m packing up wth cbs once this job ends. Quite like the idea of having a scanner in the cab though (I live on the Brize Norton flightpath).

As Tony says, one of the New York FM repeaters, KQ2H, is bouncing in at the moment, and it’s easy to get on low power.

To give you guys an idea how ham radio is a lot better, take a look at my logbook on the link I gave previously, and see some of the stations I have worked. (Click on the logbook tab.)

I’ve said it before, if anyone is in the vicinity of Wakefield on a Friday night, then pop along to my club on Barnsley Road, and we will give you a demo.

Ken. G8FSO.

I use one, travel the a75,a41 and a55.couldn’t be without a cb.the help u see around corners. It has saved me points and fines and manys a Vosa weighbridge.

well said…+1

the main reason why cb is better than ham radio has to be this…before you bin your old a.m. cb,( the fm ones don’t count and never did) when they legalised it,then that took all the fun out of it,and a.m. still rules the roads as far as the 75,55,41 etc …but…wrap an elastic band round the microphone,go out on a nice sunny sunday with a flask of hot tea and some biscuits, and find wherever the local anoraks are having their aero modelling hardon session…sit somewhere handy to get the best view, and casuall fllck through the channels till you hit the same one that some other Herbert is using…then watch 5 years worth of solitude, self abuse, and no life effort go screaming into the ground at maximum speed from a great height,or just simple flys off into the setting sun as you’ve jammed the signal and the receiver don’t know what to do…its always best to do this when your parked handy for a quick getaway in case they click, …or was it only me that did that 30 years ago??

Lol

Quick question, boss is anti cb, so I can’t fix one in permanent. Any ideas how I can sneak the aerial lead in through preferably the top of a Daf LF cab without drilling? Could do without cutting the plug off and refitting if possible.

How about a mag mount and run the coax in the passenger door? It’s not ideal but I said passenger side as it’s not opening and shutting as much as the drivers side, so will cut down on crush damage to the lead. You can pull down the door rubber, thread the coax through and then push the rubber back into place.

Is handbag still around? Used to work for wilkinsons in the late 80’s early 90’s. And I think the other was called Diesel Queen I think he was some sort of rep who had a rig in his car. Both funny fellas and brightened up the day with their banter.

Day driver mate. So back on the yard every day. If I had to keep losing the cable every day, then refitting it the following morning, I know what I’m like, it’d end up thrown up on the cab roof, under the spoiler until the rattling peed me off enough that I’d drop the aerial in the bin.

I’ll have to have a nosey up under the spoiler. The mobile phone aerials are up there, so there must be some way in. Like I said, was just hoping to not have to cut off, then resolder the plug.

have a look to see if cb aerial is already fitted

Hiya have a mag mount with a T27(2ft Ariel) pop the lead through the sun roof if the mag is behind
the spoiler no one will see it.i had my ariel set 1 inch above trailer height that was handy for low bridges,
we went under one bridge at the marshes in Kent god that was a tight fit, the ariel always warned you
by rattling into the cab roof. we was forced to go under there was no way round.

I had no idea what I was after, and I can’t hard wire one into my motor, so I got a handheld which apparently has loads of features. Can be run off batteries or ■■■ lighter, and will connect to an external aerial. Midland Alan 42. Got loads of Euro bands on it too.

Sod it. Been for a poke around up top, and it’s only fibreglass. Thank heavens, there’s a metal blank where a decent specced model would have a sunroof, otherwise I’d be jiggered with my magmount. Just going to drill a hole in the fibreglass and grommet it with a bit mastic for good measure.

What goes on under the spoiler, stays under the spoiler

Would be good if the old CB made it’s way back.

I was the first person in west yorkshire to get prosecuted for using cb radio back in 1978. Got fined £150!!! You dont get that for kicking someones granny to bits these days. Not that I want to kick a granny you understand.
