Category C - Training Diary

Glad you enjoyed yourself Sam, keeping fingers crossed for you this week!

Glad you had a good first day. Do they still do the reversing in the industrial estate car park?

I never had the gearbox 100% on my assessment drive but it seemed to have fell into place in the time I had been waiting for the course to start

You will be surprised at how much will go in when you are asleep so if you have a bad day then do not beat yourself up because it will all come together after a good nights kip - I kid you not

Not as far as I’m aware - only at the VOSA test centre @ Western Road.

I think he probably meant the reversing practise- generally the first day is spent on the road and then on the second day you start reversing practise, which will take up at least a quarter of your lesson time and more likely a third.

It can seem tedious but it is absolutely essential. With all due respect, anybody can drive a truck forwards, reversing one is the art.

Keep us informed!

Yes I know  - They share the VOSA test centre with, well er, VOSA, for their lessons and exams

Good luck with the test Sam, I passed my C+E today , 3rd attempt but i got it in the end .
We were at the test station at 8.am this morning and it was freezing, instructor said it could be called off but its up-to the examiner,( SHE was great, lol ) if the braking exercise was still done it would have been off.

Anyway ive been like a bear with a sore head for a month now, but now its a massive weight off my shoulders. So whatever happens keep it up and don’t let it beat you …

Who did you use for your training  if you went to Newcastle test centre there are at least 2 ladies examiners both called Linda

i had three tests cancelled due to bad weather,it really knocked my confidence cause i thought i was forgetting stuff, i did the intesive training and test on the friday but because of the weather and christmas it was 5 weeks before i got back to try again but it was snowing during my lesson so got cancelled by phone before we got there,
turned up to test centre for third attempt and the gates are locked cause of frost on the test area,(i found out later) no notice or anything just locked gates and deserted yard (i think the examiners fancied a day off) :unamused:

Nice one mate!!

Day 2

Morning was a shambles, kept going from 5th to 6th instead of 5th - 7th which would of been better as it meant less mirror checks and over all less work. My mirrors were to pot and as a result so was my position - i was sitting just a little too far to the right. The more he nagged the more I thought and made more errors.

Afternoon though was better and did some very tight turns, up and downhill starts and angle starts. Must remember it’s double changes on downhill starts and single on ups, as well as foot on the footbrake and handbrake off on downhills. Also went through how to operate different loading/restraining devices etc and revised some more for my Mod 4 practical demonstration which is on thursday at 12:15 - this is the part i’m least looking forward to as when I’m asked questions I tend to forget absolutely everything. I’d rather do it practically than explain which you need to do also as you know.

Not a bad day but it’s not been great, hope today was the ‘slump’ all people seem to have during training.

Exactly that.

Everybody has a very good first day, confidence starts to fall during the second day, but generally rises sharply towards the end of the course as everything seems to come together.

Sam,

At least you’re able to write an honest summary.
From what you’ve written, I’m not seeing a cause for great concern, cos you clearly know your stuff and you’re aware of the parts that didn’t go quite so well already.

From my experience, the vast majority of trainees have a ‘wobble’ on the second or third day of their course, or even on both of those days. If you have another ‘wobbly’ day tomorrow, my guess is that it might be in different subject areas than those that you had trouble with today. Eg; you get your road positioning right tomorrow, but then misjudge the reversing exercise a time or two.

The trick is to get everything together for the special day, and I think it works for most people most of the time.

Does the downhill start still exist ?

It has been years since I taught handbrake for the uphill…Footbrake for the downhill.

Sam, dont beat yourself up about this one. It wont be the difference between good and evil

Yes it does, I did it last month on c+e, and downhill angled starts. My instructor told us to remember BOBO, brake on brake off.

I am actually more concerned about my Mod 4 that I am the test to be perfectly honest this is how bad I am when it comes to being asked a question, hands up - i’d always freeze. I’m going to try use up as much time as possible on it though. Didn’t help being told that none of his candidates hadn’t failed it until now/yet. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also need to remember HNPS, Handbrake, neutral, paddle (check down/flick down) and signal (off).

That’s not the way to fill anyone looking to train with you with confidence is it

I’d rather you kept this to PM please. I don’t want my thread being filled up with this.
