Those dash swivel fans used to keep the mozzies away. They hated any kind of turbulence in the air.
Yeah Harry had one of them but leave one of them going … Next morn off we go then…click click, click click. Oh s**t !!! Gonna be a good day !!!

A old hand once saw me covered in mozzy bites and told me to eat a lot of garlick, mozzys dont like garlick ,big mistake ,i munched my way thru a full bulb and stunk off it,the old guy must have been having a laugh because mozzys love garlick ,i was covered from head to toe in bites
Mosquitoes bit every one, the swelling is an allergic reaction that some people have towards them. I saw an Irish guy that had the worst reaction I’ve ever see, his face was so puffy he could hardly see out his eyes I had one of those things that plug into the cigarette lighters, my girlfriend ( now wife ) used to sent the tablets to me from Australia. It worked well in the cab but of course when you were outside in the yard at loading at midnight Friday it didn’t do much good.
Green Oloa vera jell is good for bits, or if you can get access to a very hot shower, get it as hot as you can stand but only for a few seconds it’ll take the itch right out straight away. Or you could spend the summer in Wales.
Most of the Italians used to stop at Santhia, or as they called it " Zanth "
We did a regular run to Alessio Carne in Vercelli and the mossies were in clouds there. My trick was to slip Muslin sleeves over the doors with the windows down, spray the cab and unload. The only mossies that got in then got the rolled up newspaper treatment. One of the lads had a theory that they never flew above 10ft and tried sleeping on the box. Wrong! Another tried sleeping with the cab full of spray. Wrong! Both suffered for days after.Jim.
Turbo went one night between Torino & Milano by the side of the rice fields in Summer. Engine was red hot -in the morning the mozzie situation was serious!
I’ve always used the plug-in ceramic heaters with those rectangular tablets - ie ‘mozzie burners’. I’m still using them now in my flat in Cairo. ‘Raid’ produce really good eucalyptus tabs that are good for 10 hours and are not harmful to humans - they’re really effective! If your’e having a cook-up outside, camion stew style with other drivers, those little pots that the Italians use for their b-b-qs (Cintronella?) are pretty handy. Robert
Horrible b’stard mozzies… I’ve tried the citronella candles seem to be the best things…but don’t know why the mozzies always attack ankles/feet ■■
Worst time I had of them was in Tours services (BP garage) they must have had a meeting or some such.a cab was riddled with them, after 2 hours I gave up and drove home…and I had a burner tablet thing plugged in. Which generally worked ok but didn’t seem to work that night.
I now live in barcelona and hardly ever get bitten…what’s changed ■■ French mozzies squad ?
I once had full wkend off in carissio with my mate who had red hair and pure white skin. By sat night he never had a white bit on his body ! He had to go to the local hospital by ambulance ! 5 hours later he came back covered in bandages from head to toe. He never went there again. !

First visit to the internationally renown weekend resort of Carisio was an ill fated trip to Istanbul in the company of Buller Ward, circa January1980 (he has written a couple of very readable books about his underworld activities in the days of the Krays)
Having been captured at Aosta for an over value issue on a TIR carnet and spent 23 days at the autoport in 1980, I ventured, tractor unit only to Carisio, on recomendation from numerous regular Uk Italian truckers who enquired about my extended stay in Aosta as they were out on their second trip during my partial e
incarseration.
Well, a great weekend drinking ice cold Frizzante in a long glass, OMG, what a hangover, but fortunately, the mozzies took a dislike to my blood alcohol levels and left well alone. Took the good lady to Carisio a good few years later, the food was great and the reception was as always welcome, just as I remember it… Happy days.
all the very best Mick B
What was the name of the other Bar where we used to go swimming even though we stayed at Carisios ? so long ago I cant remember, must be due to the fact that I am retired after being on the road for 44 fantastic years (well, except the last 12 years when I ended up doing UK work and being treated like a gipsy, ie. ■■■■ and ■■■■ in laybys, sleep in laybys, and eat at dirty dog vans in laybys. 65 now and enjoying my retirement but driving a Van for a couple of days. Do I miss the Job ■■ would I go back if offered ? Yes I miss the Job food, wine comradship of other drivers weekends on the beech and getting paid for it etc etc etc. To go back now■■? no way since they opened up the borders its nothing like it used to be and never will be .Now the Poles,Romanians,Bulgarians etc have joined the EU they all got money to buy all new Trucks and Trailors. And most stuff they bring over here are not from there Countries but Germany,Austria, Switzerland,Holland etc. Hasn’t anybody noticed you hardly ever see German etc lorries over here no more ? well that’s why. In one of the daily papers once, a survey was carried and they reckon out of every 10 lorries you see on the motorway 6 are polish registered, how frightening is that. I was at Dover docks a few months ago and it was so hard to find a English lorry, so so sad.

Well said haulage has changed forever did anyone ever go along to the restaurant at Arluno?
If I wanted quick meal, Arluno was the place to go because you didn’t get caught up with so many other people that wanted to delay your progress (gotta get to Vicenza or Sommacampagna customs). Run by a good ol’ gal but from memory always dimly lit…
John Nicholls,
The place we used to go Swimming was along at Santhia. A real nice place to go to in the warm weather, plus you got a break from the mozzies. Go towards Torino, go off at Santhia through the peage, up to the T junction, turn left back over the Autostrada, then it’s on your left.
Stubo,
There were two mutchly frequented places at Arluno. These were either the Sisters, nearer to the Autostrada. Or carry on and go to the Glasshouse, another good spot, though often used by a certain firm from West Yorkshire ( I’m from North Yorkshire ) if they were there in numbers there was usually bother. No names no pack drill, but you know who you were.
Got to be one of the worst places for Mosquitos That I have ever Stayed at
I’m sure those bloody things had gas masks on as my mosquito burner did absolutely nothing .
The Glasshouse that was a good restaurant. I remember having some banter with 2 cockneys one night and the more wine they consumed the more rubbish they spoke. Then they went on about me being Scottish and how the Scots are miserable and don’t like putting our hands in our pockets etc, the funny thing was when we went out to the wagons there was only one with road tax on it!
