If your previous job involved using your brain then initially you will like truck driving but it will soon become a chore, it’s the kind of job where you can remove your brain on your start day and pick it up when you finish, there is little to no mental stimulation once you get accustomed to the size and where to position the vehicle.
All in all if you want to exist in a job while waiting to die then trucking is the job for you.
As you can tell I’m not into it, I was a sparky with my own business, got an injury, couldn’t work, lost my business and needed something to get money in, luckily for me after 2.5 years I’ve been given the all clear on my injury and am actively seeking a job that requires some brain work again.

What a ray of sunshine you are. Not all driving is brain numbing. I guess you are talking about trunking or rdc work, where you just go A to B to A. Then do the same next day and the next day and the next day. Some of us have jobs that involve a little bit of extra work.

Mind numbing ?

The minute I feel driving a truck has become mind numbing then I will hang up the keys and do somoething else…anything.

Truckers who drive when they feel mind numbed are dangerous and generally the ones who cause accidents…

Would you care to elaborate on this extra work that is sooooo taxing on the brain, does it involve mind blowing things like strapping stuff down and opening and closing curtains?

id think it wasnt extra work that was sooooooooo taxing on the brain than rdc tosco/stobart type work that by definition is completely suited to brain dead lemmings being paid from the kneck down with no option to think for yourself.do not deviate from the risk assesment instructions and endless inductions for h&s pish.theres plenty of jobs where your going different places with different aspects to the work daily and weekly.even if its new roads, and new countries, its more of a challange than demeaning your skils to a life of rdc trunking and the likes.

Er no it doesn’t. I’m afraid using a ratchet strap doesn’t mentally stimulate me. Only time I open curtains is when I get up.

When I was at school my teacher caught me daydreaming looking out of the classroom window, she said nobody would pay me to look out of a window when I’m older. How wrong she was!!!

FWIW, we pay through breaks and our night out pay covers food, and parking is paid seperate. Due to a peculiarity of our work, abt least half the nights out are actually in hotels when it’s full expenses.

As Juddian says, you will most likely have to work your way up to the better paying jobs, though you may as well aim high from the start, we took on two under 25s and they’ve worked out well for us and us for them.

I always thought we were average and then I came on here and saw some of the conditions people work for and realised actually, we aren’t too bad.

Our firm doesn’t allow us to park in laybys or industrial estates. We either use snap truck stops that are on our account or we will use our depots spread over the country. I think every tramper deserves this as it isn’t just about the load and lorry. It is the drivers life at risk too.

Sounds like a crap firm telling you where to park. No one trusted to work it out for themselves?

They don’t tell us where to park, they will allow us to park anywhere other than laybys and industrial estates. They will pay for all of our parking. My last company was a crap one by telling us to park anywhere that is free. My opinion is higher of my latest employer in that respect.

What’s the average cost of a lorry park?

Examples…

Penrith is £17.

Ashford is £29.50

Most of the MSA’s are around the £30 mark.

Your company should be paying for this.

I love the job.
I got my original license in 87 class three hgv and a class 1 psv, I took the bus driver route for 17 years then moved to the office in the same company (after a serious accident) for 7 years.
I was made redundant and did some cash in hand 7.5t work then got another job for a housing association, office work on agency.
I moved from there labouring at a forklift truck dealers, after a few months they needed a 26t class 2 driver and I was chosen, a year later they paid for my class 1, I did that for a few years and recently left to do tanker work 4on4off, mostly farms/dairies, plenty of miles and I rather like it.
Added it pays very well.
As you can see, I’m happy

What’s their problem with you parking on ind ests ?
As long as they are well lit, you are parking with nothing valuable on board with back doors open, and a few other trucks are maybe around, I reckon they are as safe as anywhere.

They don’t want their diesel stolen, ripped curtains, customers goods damaging, trucks damaged and least of all for our safety, they insist on us having secure parking even if they get us to another depot. I think it is great and see no problem with this at all. I like a shower each evening and dress smart for work which is another reason they like us to use parking facilities. We very rarely are parked up empty and so it protects the customers goods as far as reasonably possible. I have parked on industrial estates and in laybys in the past but that was not through my own choice. This company pays for all parking so why would we not ?

They sound a bit paranoid, sounds like they think you’re parking in war zones.
I park mostly on estates as I said with doors open, and only if the load aint valuable, nickable, damageable or all 3.
I’ve had 2 (failed) attempted bits of agro overnight in last 15 yrs, that I can think of…because I park selectively.
I get a shower most days, (but usually in THEIR time :sunglasses: ).) and I don’t dress like a tramp in the dark either.

If valuable load Truckstops on a/c, and at other depots.
Works for me.
