Tell me the names of learner drivers because I want to learn driving and I don’t miss this opportunity if they are good.
The main cause is that 60% (approx.) of the drivers on the road are amateurs for whom driving is just something that has to be done as quickly as possible so they can get on and do what they are driving to
I would have though that the figure was nearer 100% as driving is simply to get you (and possibly goods) from a to b.
getting a bit tired of hearing about amateur drivers as if they are somehow less than professionals, there are plenty of professional clowns out there .

Has someone just got another user name? Can’t understand a word of this
Daft idea to let learners on the motorways, they should get their fast road learning done on dual carriageways and then make pass-plus compulsory so they get some motorway tuition in.

I agree, if one of these pull out in front of you at 40mph while you are on the limiter it will all be over before the instructor can react and sort it out, if it is brought in then there may be a quick change of policy when a couple of them have been squashed because it will make all the front pages!
Dual carriageway first in my opinion, if you live in Norfolk you have no choice anyway.
Pointless! As many have said already the driving instructors are usually stuck in lane 2 for most of their motorway journey as I have seen. I’d like to hear what they tell the pupils. Probably something along the lines of ‘Now this is the car lane and that bit to your left is where the lorries go, on your right is for when its quiet to use or if you have anexpensive car!’

will the difference between motorway on the limiter (56) and the speed on a DC (50) make that much difference? (especially as many on here openly brag about using DC’s on the limiter)
also, on a motorway you may have some escape room, 3rd lane, none on a DC.
As “pro” drivers I would expect that if you were approaching a car bearing “L” or even "P"plates you would be prepared for unusual moves and react accordingly, wether on a motorway or not.
I think everyone should have a go at driving a truck on private land in an attempt to educate them about the stopping distances and blindspots etc. I don’t have an Hgv license but got to drive them on private land when my dad had his own trucks. An example of ignorance about trucks is when i refused to car share to work with one guy as he was always diving in front of trucks and braking heavily to avoid the back of the vehicle in front and he couldn’t see the problem with it!.
gardun:
Judging by the performances I have seen from many instructors in marked cars on the motorway they haven’t a clue, so God help their pupils
i couldn’t agree more.
i don’t agree with motorway tuition for new drivers.
they should keep it as it is, and then do a motorway course several weeks after passing their test, and having some driving experience.

There are a lot of if’s in there, I agree that as drivers would or should be cautious but who knows what is going through the mind of a 17 or 18 year old driving for the first time on a motorway and the instructor says “watch for that lorry and pull out when you think it is safe” - boy looks in the mirror thinking he can beat you then pulls out!!!
you would assume that the “instructor” would not make such a request.
That kind of request is the one that examiners would use to ascertain your judgement.
An instructor would be expected to advise wether the distance avaiable was sufficient for the manouvre.
and there wasn’t a single “if” in my post

For my sins, and the amount of flak I’m going to get, I’m an Approved Driving Instructor and have some information to share with you all about my style of teaching.
I take pupils on fast “A” roads to get them to grasp speed and overtaking, while on “L” plates.
I teach them to respect trucks and motorcycles, 'cos I drive them both frequently.
Pass Plus is not compulsory and is being phased out.
I insist on a motorway lesson just after they’ve passed.
(The route is Stevenage-A1M-A404 to Watford-M25-Terminal 1 and 3 at Thiefrow-stop for a short break-then back-M25-A1M and home. Takes three hours.)
I have never cancelled a lesson for bad weather, snow or ice.
Emergency stop most lessons, wet roads included.
My longest lesson was five hours, Stevenage to West Wales.
So, the sooner I can take learners onto motorways the better, gives me more to teach, ergo, more money.
Cheers
PaulPS If you think trucking is poorly paid, try being a full time ADI…
How do you enforce this? I applaud the idea but if a student says Foxtrot Oscar what sanction do you have?

They were guessy if’s, it’s cos I’m old
it dosn’t matter how much tuition you give them, it dosn’t matter what roads you teach them on, it dosn’t matter if you teach them to drive round the world backwards before giving them a licence.
if that [zb]er gets his hands on a BMW, then it’s a complete waste of time and money.
What most drivers forget, is the fact that they too were once learners !!!
I think the driving test is too basic, and as we all have done is, once passed, elbow out the window, and show off to the wife/girlfriend.
I think motorway lessons should be given after passing the test, make it a two part course, and no licence without passing both parts. or an urban licence for local driving, with a no motorway stamp if you have not had the training.
It should be remembered that vast parts of the UK have no motorways or very little in the way of them, Lincs/Norfolk/Suffolk/Wales and north of Dundee there is nothing, an urban licence would be fine for granny to go to the shops but what about the rest of the populas? Like everything a gvt thinks will be a good idea it has not been thought out, most are just knee jerk reactions to something that has happened and caught public attention.
