You’ll have to load cars and that up on to the wagon and strap them down if you’re using a wrecker, if you’re just going out in vans to change wheels and jump start stuff it sounds almost ideal, if they don’t supply Hi Vis waterproofs then the Pulsar ones are the best I’ve found.
a few things to remember, folk will drive round cones, they tend to drive INTO recovery vehicles.
Always park behind the stricken vehicle with wrecker facing the verge and wheels on lock towards the verge (away from traffic) and exit the wrecker with your body inside the door (that is to say don’t open the door use it like a shield, I’ve not explained that well sorry)
When you’re ready to load up put the customer in the wrecker and immobilise it (key out and in your pocket)
Build speed in the hard shoulder and pull into the running lane once you’re at motorway speed
I know I sound like I’m teaching you to ■■■■ eggs and I apologise for that but recovery is plenty dangerous enough even with loads of experience.
is it an Ipswich firm then? red trucks??
Gentlemen, please let us sit back & re-evaluate the situation.
It is trying to mix, what we might consider a genuine question with a total fantasy.
Is it really possible to be a recovery driver & a HUMONGOUSLY endowed ■■■■ star in the same sentence?
I’m all for [zb]posts, but it hurts me when I see genuine replys to this nonsense.
It’s very much a “marmite” job. You’ll either love it or hate it. Personally I love it. Yes, you are going to meet a few merchant bankers. But the other 99% of your customers are going to be really pleased to see you.
You get to hear some interesting life stories on the distance runs and get to tell your own over and over again.
Yes, Mr and Mrs Micra may drive a POS, but it’s their POS so have a little respect for whatever vehicle you go out to be it a battery powered invalid scooter or a fully loaded artic.
Give it a go. You will face a new challenge every day and meet some great people along the way.
HTH
Yep, it’s dirty, hard, exhausting work and easy to get yourself injured.
Dunno, about recovery though, never done it.
I was lucky as had a SLA bed so got a lot of cars like this! You will know when it’s for you when your lying on the A34 at 2am putting a chain around a cars axle and the gritter lorry comes past and pebble dashes you!
As said above, some of the most interesting people I have ever met were customers. Also some tip you really well for going that extra mile after they have spent 1/2 hour moaning at you because the RAC have left them on the hard shoulder for 3 hours etc.
After a while I gave the heavys a go but this is HARD work! I tried it but found it wasn’t for me. The money was there but so were the hours! Scrabbling around in ■■■■ ridden lay bys trying to chain props up or remove half shafts wasn’t my cup of tea, but I tried it before I decided!
It can be fairly hard work. It’s true these days most of the firms like their drivers to be within 100km (as the crow flies) from base, so that they can maximise their advantage of ‘domestic-rules’, which exempt you from having to use the tacho. If you go over the 100km boundary, you’re supposed to put a card in, and also you’re to record the bext fortnights work via tacho.
Aside from all that BS, it’s not a bad job, I enjoyed my time doing it part-time. It’s only when I started driving artics that I realised just how vulnerable you really are, particularly when the casualties don’t make it to a lay-by on a dual carriageway, so you must always keep safety firmly in mind. Ask any wrecker driver of more than a year or so’s standing and you’ll hear plenty of tales about near misses.
As others will tell you, and from my own experience, the one real downer is that it just aint marriage friendly. I’ve even been on the vinegar stroke and the blasted phone went…
The op is a nutter.i say this for 2 reassons,1-he reckons he is going to camden for a shafest and 2 he thinks there wont be distance work involved in recovery
thanks guys really appreciate the feedback esp tipper tom.
its a 7.5 ton Renault midlum I believe I will be driving , I wnt be doing any heavy stuff , and I have found out that modern cars dnt have a spare wheel , or some of them don’t , I drive a car that has one so I found that an eye opener , my controller the guy who has said ring him if I have any querys out on the job has said you just recover them and take em to nearest tyre depot , so that’s a bonus I wont be changing many wheels .
im not sure of the colour of the trucks in answer to an earlier post but I hope I can say the company , its autofastfix.com? based on ransome europark ,and the wage ive been told is £1600 a month take home plus a small bonus if you keep the truck in good condition of £100 a month , now to me that sounds ok , bearing in mind ive been out of wrk for a while ? and he has confirmed that he trys 2 keep truck local as much as poss as long distance does not pay , which to me is fine , they supply p p e equipment jackets boots etc so so far it seems all ok .
Autofastfix.com?! Used to be Red Rocket. Used to be L.E.G. I’m going to pm you.
£900 for 1 day to enjoy yourself and you wouldn’t invest £150? - the cost of a half decent call girl for 1 hour. However I thought HIV tests had to be x 2, 6 months apart?
Thought I’d seen everything in 10 years on TN
ep used to be red rocket and rusty nail ive sent you a pm , thanks guys aqain 4 all your input , and rusty nail I really appreciate the message you sent …
