Can you take the passenger seat out

One of our drivers always takes the passenger seat out and has done for years without any problems at MOT time.
We must have half a dozen passenger seats in a storeroom that have been taken out and never put back in when the truck has been replaced.

Hiya…can’t see as it matters…i took a truck for MOT the seat was wobbly and had a rip in the cloth. i said to the tester this is bad.
he replied now’t to do with MOT. the only problem would be the disconnection of any airbag canister as it connects under the seat base
and onto the seat belt device

If your FH has a top bunk you can turn the bunk brackets upside down
which pushes the bunk higher up and it can still be used as storage.

Get a pal to help you do it, as its not light when it hits you on the bonce.

Hi All

This might sound stupid, But can you take the passenger seat out of a Volvo fh, Asked Thomas Hardie all they’ve said is you will have to put it back in for MOT, BECAUSE it was built with a passenger seat.

There has been trucks without passenger seats, Renault did one a few years back so just wondered if i could, As space is a little down on my DAF 95

Which depot said you can’t take the seat out? They’re wrong. As long as you take the seatbelt out as well as the seat, you’ll be fine.

HDNL (now yodel) take the passenger seat out of all their vans, eta, it does not come with one

Wouldn’t it be the same situation as a spare tyre? If it’s there then it has to be legal, but it’s not a requirement to have one.

A spare tyre does not have to be legal while it is stowed away.

I think you’re wrong, Harry. But that’s only my humble opinion.

And the opinion of an inspector at my local testing station. :unamused:

Took my car to the garage I have used for years for all work vans and HGVs, passed and came back with an advisory saying that “spare wheel missing”. I told him it was in the bootwell designed for the spare tyre. The mechanic/owner winked at me and said "it’s not legal as it’s too bald.
So I either fail it, or it goes down as missing. "

He recognised it was a waste of time to fail it because I could have presented it without the tyre and passed fine.

Took the passenger seat out of my 141 made it a great deal better since the bunk sat at the right height but wondered for years why a passenger seat,
they are an expensive piece of kit in a lorry,do without it and reduce costs on a new buy.Passenger seat should be an optional extra can’t say I have ever
sat in the seat in my Magnum even although it turns, could easily do without it.

Each to their own isn’t it?
Removing the seat shouldn’t be a problem but for me I’d be lost without it.
45min break and as soon as I park up at night and hace done my paperwork then it’s boots off and into the passenger seat.
Work time behind the wheel, leisuretime without wheel, pedals etc. in the way.

If you were bloody minded enough and had let’s say a crack in your windscreen, it is perfectly acceptable to remove said windscreen and get the vehicle tested without it. Strange but true.

When I started in transport, we always took our passenger seats out of the Scania’s we had because we wanted some extra room. Not one of them failed an MOT for this, so unless things have changed in the last couple of years, I’d suggest it’s fine.

I drive a Stralis, and that doesn’t have a proper fitted passenger seat. It’s nice to have that extra room to throw yourself about in while tramping away. . . .

Since when? I worked at Shaw for a short while and finished in December and 1 of our jobs was to run the Sprinter van to a job and it had passenger seats.

The tesco home delivery vans I used to work on only had a driver’s seat. They fitted a lockable cage in the place the passenger seat was.

this was pre sprinter days

Except in Italy, that is why they used to have to put covers on them.

Another lorry with no MOT

Not ALL of the Sprinters have the seats removed.

Harry is correct, inspector is wrong.
