Can agency work earn you a decent living?

Try to establish a good trusting relationship with the agency clerk.
State your requirements eg:
minimum of £9.00 per hour with time and a half after eight hours
Minimum £10.00 per hour flat rate
minimum £100 per shift. A shift being 10 hours.
premium rate if required to start 1800h and 0600h
Time and a half saturdays
Double time sundays and bank holidays
Night out rate £30
No lower rates for lower category vehicles
Finish time is 30 minutes after tacho extraction
Always try to complete the job to the clients satisfaction.
Keep a “black book” of bad clients and tell the agency that you will not drive for those people again.

Most agencies I’m with will just laugh at those ‘demands’ and tell me I’ll get what I’m given. One of them offered me an extra £3ph if I’d drop my current class 2 job to work for them as they were desperate for HIAB drivers. The guy wouldn’t confirm that in writing or via text and his boss knew nothing about it when I called later, so just best to treat them all with a pinch of salt…

Ha! Also, be realistic and live in the real world.

Its not all bad on agency. Ive been doing some steel haulage this year because I let it slip that Id done it before. However, with all the stupid rules, i.e. hard hat, goggles ect and the most stupid of all we not allowed on the trailer to chain up! I simply informed the agency that I wouldnt be doing steel any more. You generally cant pick n choose when youre employed.
Ive been agency 5 years, and Im not rich yet! but Im very happy on there. When you start off do anything at anytime....on time. Be reliable. Smart. Polite. After a while youre in a better position to backheel stuff.
