Very true. The amount of Chinese students scattered throughout the world is almost certainly planned to gather industrial and scientific info that could be used by them. However they are surpassed in numbers by the amount of Indian students both here and in the US, again probably for industrial/scientific purposes.
I wonder if the monies they pay are included in the trade surplus/deficit figures of the countries involved. It must be huge. According to this report the Chinese students alone contributed just over $14 billion to the US economy in 2023.
There are limited 8ndian researchers in the university and those that are are evenly spread over the different subjects with a slight leaning to the medical sciences. Where as the chinese are far more frequent and only in science and engineering. One example i was told of the guy had managed to get himself into the head convieener for electronics. He asked my friend what was the difference between electrical and electronic engineering. These chinese are just purely there to report back to china

The figures for goods, and also for services, are available from reputable sources such as the World Bank, Statista, and others.

I wasn’t trying to deflect the Chinese intentions, just wanting to put some context on it. On the plus side I would expect that MI6 are actively recruiting possible candidates to become western spies when they return to their homeland.
The thing is though, with industrial espionage nowadays it’s easier and a lot cheaper to infiltrate data systems to get hold of the knowledge you seek.
