Some pictures of the pre war Maudslay Magna SF40 which was apparently Ailsa and Wulfrunian like, front engined.
So far I don’t think we have mentioned the Guy Wulfrunian, a design which introduced so many features seen later in more successful vehicles.

I’m quite sure this rather odd double decker was in the video link parade that Froggy55 posted earlier.

Larry that newspaper cutting showing buses emerging from Hexham bus station must have been in the 1950s A United Leyland Tiger probably leaving for Allenheads on the 37 (United tended to run Leyland single deckers from Hexham and Carlisle depots for the trunk service 34 Carlisle to Newcastle which I travelled on many times as a boy en route to Blyth. There has been much controversy recently about the demolition of the old bus station some saying it should be a listed building I agree for nostalgic reasons. However they have built a very nice new bus station almost opposite the new Hexham Hilton hospital… I wonder who the Bedford Utility bus belonged to back then, M.A Charlton perhaps, Rochester & Marshall or Tyne Valley ■■
BD 3 was Carlisle Willowholm depot tow bus, my mate who was a fitter there was a regular driver. This looks like Willowholm depot railings.
Cheers Leyland 600
Thanks, Valkyrie, for the informations concerning the Waggonbau double-decker and Maudslay bus!
I’m lost and not for the first time recently, which posts or pictures do Hexham bus station and Willowholme railings refer to please? I am finding it increasingly difficult in many old time TN threads to relate a comment upon a picture back to the original post which is sometimes two pages away. I follow the reason for the site’s automatic substitution with a reference number, but is there some other way - a link or thumbnail method?
CAV The new Hexham bus station photos refer to Larry Dunbars newspaper cutting scan on page 4 of a United Leyland /Willowbrook bus en route to Allenheads, the site of the new bus station is just beyond what appears to be a Bedford OB where the road forks off left down to the railway station.
My reference to Ribble tow wagon BD3 is linked to oilreaders photo (by the late Ronnie Cameron) posted on page 1. August 18th . Carlisle depot is situated on the Willowholme industrial estate to the west of the city.
Cheers, Leyland 600
The first horizontal Midland red bus looks like a d9 model. The Bedford coach is about 1957 vintage (ONR993) owned by bishops of coalville. They used to run weekly services to bournemouth Great Yarmouth and other seaside destinations. I rode on them as a kid they were taken over by Bancroft and Powers later . Their booking office and garage was located on owen street in coalville
DeanB . A friend of mine from Greymouth used to look after and maintain the Leyland Comets used within the power station and over the Wilmot Pass, now an operator in his own right. I travelled over the Wilmott Pass in 2006 in a Volvo coach and it was raining cats and dogs but still very impressive. The road is of the unsealed type.
Cheers Leyland 600.
Hi 240 Gardner, Here are a couple of Atki brochure scans describing the Atkinson Alpha underfloor engined chassis. I have had this brochure in my collection since about 1957. I did travel on Venture’s Atkinsons from Newcastle to Blackhill, Consett on a couple of occasions in the mid 1950 not long after they arrived new.
Cheers, Leyland 600
