Buses, coaches, & lorries

Or a stretched twin-steer Trunker

I’ve had a look over the Old So’ton thread to find a photo of “The Spirit of Dot” but can’t see one.
If I remember she was a Scammell 8 wheeler tipper, with the rear axle cut off, and chassis shortened. A continental unit for PBC. Twin steer not tandem. (Chinese 6)

Just before my time really, but I did hear a few stories.

My middle name is Dot. It must be, because it appears between the first and second names on my email address.

Regent Circus. Swindon

“The Sound Of Music” on at the flicks. 1965 then?

From what I can gather, yes - 1965. I daresay the Lodekka would’ve been quite new.

Bristol, Leyland or Gardner powered?

Gardner according to Bus Lists On The Web - the reg no is JAE93D. Did Bristol Omnibuses run out as far as Swindon?

Cave Browne Cave heating system

BOC had a depot at Trowbridge and I believe operated services to Swindon

Yes: according to wiki, Bristol Omnibus opened branch there in 1921.

I remember Clayton Dewandre heaters in the buses ok for passengers but the drivers draughty half cabs weren’t afforded that luxury.
Edit
Found a pic of 1949 advert.

In a roundabout way I found a comment on facebook stating that The Sound of Music was playing at the Odeon in May 1966. That makes sense if the bus is JAE 93D.

I think they had a branch office but not a depot, I suppose the nearest would’ve been Chippenham.
