Maybe someone should mention to him that to be in full control at all times that is NOT the best way to hold the steering wheel.
GRUMPY old man.
Good point.
Looks like there is a lot of power assistance on that steering doesnât it?
I donât remember the steering ever being light enough to be holding the wheel like that, Does the vehicle have âupdatedâ steering I wonder?
The E reg 5 pot rigid Atkinson I drove had had incredibly light power steering retrofitted. I know ther had been complaints about the heaviness of the steering before I had it. I was more concerned about the brakes. I only ever shunted the F reg unit, which had very heavy manual steering. I guess the extra ton on the front axle of the rigid made a difference.
âMyâ M reg 220 Atki had no power steering on it although the previous K reg 180 Gardner did. As a youngster the extra horses counted for more than the steering of course.
The power steering was not one handed stuff, although you could actually stay seated whilst slowly reversing.
The yard was arranged for blind-side reverse parking, the lack of power meant more thinking and planning begore attempting a reverse.
Back in the day, some guvânors were concerned that power steering would lead to drivers moving the steering wheel on the spot and wearing out tyres.
Allegedly that is why power steering was an option on UK trucks, even when it was âproven technologyâ. Mind you, anyone that concerned about tyre wear would likely be in for saving a few quid on options anyway.
Carefully put together, accurate, well informed and well narrated footage.
Fort Hill Margate.
What does it look like now ??? What could be more British than a sunny day at Margate with an AEC doing the rounds. Well i suppose a rainy day
I used to go to school on one of themâŚ
Bedford Duple is itâŚor was it ?
I sat up front with the driver and it was my job to push the door open at the stops as the lady who was the bus attendant couldnât manage.
Brought back a lot of memories that pic
Jolly boys outing
