Buses, coaches, & lorries

A line up of 5 Stagecoach double deckers parked up at Wigan Bus Station, 10 a.m. Monday 14.02.2021.
I imagine the bus drivers are in the staff canteen having a bacon sandwich and a nice cup of tea.

This pic totally encapsulates the enormous change in bus design in the 60’s with a 1962 rear entrance AEC Regent and a 1971 Leyland Atlantean.

I used to drive regularly such a bus 40 years ago. Powered by a 100 bhp Panhard diesel, with a very awkward to handle 5-speed gearbox. As we say in French, it “spotted hills from very far away”.

An Alexander Dennis bus parked in Hallgate, Wigan, behind the bus
station, opposite to the Royal Mail sorting office building. 1.3.2022.

A Scania touring coach from Pats of Wrexham parked on the footpath of the A577, Ormskirk Road, Pemberton, Wigan.
I believe this company does the coach touring for what was Wigan based Shearings Coaches. One of Pats of Wrexham
coaches was shown on page 72 of this thread, 100 yards forward of this location, painted in Shearings livery.

I recently found this photo of a Lancashire United Transport bus on route 320, Wigan to Liverpool.
Despite driving Ribble buses for a couple of years in the late 1960s, and having driven on route 320
many times, I cant recognise the location in this picture. Route 320 was a joint service operated by
Ribble (Wigan depot ), Ribble ( Liverpool depot ), Lancashire United Transport, & Wigan Corporation.
The second picture is a Lancashire United Transport Guy on route 320 at the Liverpool terminus.
Perhaps someone from this area may recognise the location of the first picture. Cheers, Ray Smyth.

Hi Eddie, I think also that the bodywork is Marshall of Cambridge, but there is something gnawing away in
my head that tells me it is from a different bodybuilder. At first I thought that it was 2 pictures of the same
Dennis bus, but when I enlarged it, I could see that the number plates were different, and some of the
indicator lights & headlights were not the same. Perhaps an enthusiast from Darlington could bring us up to date.
Thank you for the picture.

Cheers, Ray Smyth.

Definitely Marshall. 10 of them supplied in 1979. Info courtesy of

A Southdown Daimler Fleetline double decker with bodywork by Northern Counties of Wigan. NMP.

Buzzer posted this magnificent cut-away illustration on the Past & Present thread this morning, but I reckon it deserves a place on here! :sunglasses: It looks like an SLT to me and as there is a reg plate showing, no doubt someone will come up with the SLT number!
