Does anyone remember the training vehicle that Bulwarks had at Chippenham ? I was a driver for Jameson International at Southampton and the company was bought by United Transport at the end of the 60’s. Some of us were sent to Chippenham to be assessed or trained at their depot there. The unit was an old Atkinson and the trailer was a tank with the front section turned into what I can only explain as a kind of greenhouse. This is where a few drivers would sit with the trainer who had radio contact with the cab. The trainer was quite a character and would not hesitate to tell who was behind the wheel at the time that it was capable of 60mph and not to dawdle ! Did anyone else out there experience this or remember the vehicle or trailer. Surely there must be somebody who either worked at Chippenham or visited the depot on here.

The vehicle that you mention was a Seddon 30/4/6LX Registration No CWV 497 C . I have just completed writing about it and am grateful to Adrian Cypher for a photo of it. I bought the vehicle from Ken Golding from Wotton under Edge in 1972 and put it to work on general haulage. I will post what I have written and the photo as soon as I get time!

Fantastic to see this piece of history. I did my training on this vehicle(different tractor though) around 1975/6 and with the same instructor whose name escapes me but I recognise one of the old original Bulwark drivers in the white overalls. He was known by the name of Jennifer, don’t ask me why !!! but when I was there he drove mainly a Buffalo( only two at Chippenham at the time if I remember) doing a lot of Shoreham/Bristol (Harveys) as we all did on and off among everything else. Another Instructor was Geoff ? We used to stop at the transport cafe on the left between Wootten Bassett and Swindon . The reversing exercises were carried out on a piece of ground on the opposite side of the road to Hullavington aerodrome on the A429. The Hillman doing the overtaking looks to be on the old A350 between Chippenham and M4 motorway a few years before it became dual carriageway. Anyway that’s my five pennorth and hope some more info comes to light. really enjoy reading all the threads especially Bubbs and Bewick. Cheers for now Ed Marshall.

From 1949 until 1967 BET continued to be one of the two major bus groups in the UK, alongside the state-owned Tilling Group (owned by the British Transport Commission and from 1963 by the Transport Holding Company).

In 1956 BET acquired a 20% interest in United Transport Company,[1] the rump of the old Red & White company, increased to 100% in 1971. United Transport continued with its freight road haulage business (Bulwark Transport Ltd), and also moved into shipping, particularly containers and tank containers.

The British Transport Commission (and later the Transport Holding Company) held minority interests in many of BET’s UK bus subsidiaries, and in late 1967 BET sold its UK bus interests to the Transport Holding Company, to become part of the National Bus Company.

United Transport had passenger transport and freight interests in southern Africa. BET owned and operated Jamaica Omnibus Services, a 600-bus operation in Kingston, Jamaica, until it was nationalised by the Jamaican Government in 1974.

In January 1987 BET briefly reentered the UK bus market, when United Transport formed the Bee Line Buzz Company to operate minibus services in the Manchester area, and started a similar operation in Preston called Zippy. However, in 1988 United sold Bee Line and Zippy to Ribble Motor Services (coincidentally once owned by BET)

The United group owned almost everything from Hoggs of Kilsyth, Ancliff, Bulwark, IFF, Seawheel and many others

and not forgetting Smith of Maddiston and Jameson European Southampton. And while I’m on can any of you Bulwark lads pass any comment on how many Gardner 8LXBs were operated in the group particularly by Smith of Maddiston. Thanks in anticipation Bewick.

You don’t give up Den, do you ?

I’m busy making a headstone for you in the shape of a Big J with those elusive 2 cylinders hanging out the back. You’ll make yourself ill worrying about it, so I thought I get prepared !
Any particular epitaph you want on it ?

I got ADR trained at Bulwark at Chippenham, (just in the training room, not out on the road in the special truck ). The one thing that stuck in my mind was the trainer saying, if it catches fire, run in the opposite direction, fast ! no being a hero, no trying to save the tractor, just RUN !!

Com’on Fergie if it was a Guy big J with an 8LXB I would have expected you to un-couple and save the tractor----then do a “runner”. Epitaph!!! "I never saw a photo"PS Hope you are all well! have to meet up some time along with one or two other retrobates off of the thread!Majic!!! Regards Dennis.

Fergie I was given the same advice on the "Hazchem " course as they were called when they were introduced I was trying to be a smart arse when the class was asked what would you do if a wagon ran into your tank and ripped it open on a side impact and I chirped up run like bloody hell and was told that was exactly right.

Dennis I hope you were not calling me a retread as I can assure you NOBODY would want me to have a second life.

R-Jacko Could this be the one your mate drove when he first started for Bulwark.
