British road Services

Hiya,
There has over the years been a lot of myth’s about the BRS expenditure
sapping the public ■■■■■,I certainly knew of two haulage outfits and
both nearby the BRS one larger by about 5 vehicles I know I worked for
both now the BRS got by with 4 office staff and 5 fitting staff 1 of which
was an apprentice, the private company who had at one time been BRS
carried a staff of 15 office staff and 7 fitting staff, the private company
were quite happy to subby off the BRS because the rates were good Er’
the Guvnor’s wording not mine and I was certainly kept busier loaded
both ways with the Red and Rust than I ever did with the privateer the
only difference being at BRS we were obliged to work to the book, Oh’
forgot both outfits employed a yard foreman.
thanks harry, long retired.

I think our depot’s Drivers’ Expenses took up a large chunk of Dennis’ financial input, H. Although the rates of pay were better under BRS we weren’t used to being limited to a maximum ten hours working per day. The status quo was soon restored by all of us booking five nights out every week. Six, if it was your turn to run on a Sunday! Plus all those similar-looking parking receipts, of course.

Another Mk 5 tipper was 194PT,We fitted an aftermarket power steering kit on it as the driver parked it up outside Merrin End because he had not got the strength to turn right into the depot.Honest,

Don’t misunderstand me “H” and ROF it’s not you Lads at the “sharp end” I crib about so definitely no hard feelings on my part. But it was the ■■■■■■■ Politicians that decided nationalisation was a good idea, it was hellers like and BRS was a ■■■■■■■ blight on the industry and a costly one at that  cheers Dennis.

I seem to recall hearing Clive’s power steering story many years ago. Proper BRS driver would have left it at Raglan and booked a night out!

But Casey it was not BRS at the time.

Of course, that explains it, Clive! Can’t do too much for a good boss.

And never enough for a bad one! :unamused: Luckily I never had one of those.

Pete.

Just for you Dennis,When I worked at Richard Reads after leaving BRS at Merrin End I was chatting to Richard about the sale and he said;Dont know why they passed here!!!
