having been interested in the beautiful little 1945 Thorneycroft Sturdy at BRS 66 reg.HWD377,I wondered if this type of vehicle was in extensive use by BRS across the country.I have looked through several books on the subject and can only find reference to 4 other vehicles 3 based at Peterborough they were HMJ 428/429/430.although HMJ429 was sold prior to 1957.I also found a 1947 Sturdy artic reg.JTU643 which was based according to records at Warrington and again disposed of around 1957 as well.Does anyone have any information about any other of these little workhorses in use by BRS?

A couple more Sturdys.

I don’t know if we have any former Sturdy drivers on here? I remember that the Thorneycroft engine had a distinct smell to it. Not unpleasant, but totally different to the Perkins and other “smaller” diesels that were in common use in the 1950s. Anyone else recollect this?

Found this drawbar Leyland photo in the latest DAF trucks magazine .

Just got this picture from a ex fitter/foreman and wrecker driver of his old Crusader at Oxford depot ,(steve mercer ) he was in tilbury docks in 2010 and saw his old girl ticking over ready to be shipped to Lagos , I had drove this loads of times as a wrecker and its funny I have just bought a photo today off ebay ,of when she was first converted to a wrecker around 1983/84 just before I started on Oxford depot , he said he found the old log book of all the breakdowns it had done back in the 80s still sat in the cab , bjf ( barry) your name was written in the log and probley mine some where .

Hiya
Now if I had a quid for every mile I’ve driven of these units and rigid eights
I certainly would be worth a million, great old motors for proper drivers.
thanks harry, long retired

A bit before my days on Brs Oxford Depot , but this weather worn wagons were how Brs ran there wagons

Another unloved Brs GUY .(OXFORD)

Now this Guy looks like it was loved more , I think I know the driver but I wont say until I see him to ask .

I hope you didn’t mind Jakey. I re-sized this one, as its a nice pic.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave

Yes thank you ! , I need to re size all my photos ! helpppppppppp ! , it looks better like that for sure

Hi Jakey,
You need to make sure your pics are 800x600 before posting them. I can’t really explain how to do it on your set up. Its a trial and error job. It took me a long time to suss it out.
Cheers Dave.

Sorry for the crapey size of the picture , hopefully Dave will sort it for me , thank you Dave

ex Brs /EXEL /dhl , these were used after I finished on Habitat Wallingford , I loved my time on drawbars with demount bodies , only reason I transferred back to Oxford Depot was I waited 7 years in line to go on the Atlet contract, and it came up I was gone ,couple of years later these white MANS replaced the blue ones .

Very doubtful IMO,Regards Larry.

Apart from the Low Bridge danger, why not? It wouldn’t have weighed much more than 7 tons, even with the weight of the cases.

I wouldn’t like to take it across a high bridge on a windy day either.
