Jimmy M, We all know why transport is such an expensive game, now the government has got rid of all it’s money makers, they get virtually nothing from the sale of ciggies, people are buying under the counter cheapies the same with booze so robbing the HGV lads and the motorists is easy money, yep they’ve got rid of all the silver revenue raisers like pubs and clubs they are closing their doors cos people are drinking cheap stuff in there own homes, i just can’t wait for the prospective candidates for parliament to come aknocking i’ll tell them where to go in my own specialist manner.

On second thoughts H don’t hit them with the Knotted rope as some of them pervert politicians will like it and then you’ll have the buggers round your place regular during the Gen. Election !!Then again H you might be a bit parcial to a bit of "corperal " as long as you are dishing it out of course !! Cheers Bewick.

Do you mean this 1964 reg BRS Seddon Tony? I think some had the AEC AV690 engine fitted, same as the AEC MK5s.Not sure if they had the AV760 Mandator engine.
If i’m wrong somebody will put me right.

hiya,
Was a fan of Seddon’s and i think that fibreglass cabbed job was the best looker of them all would have liked to have had a go in one of them but our depot did’nt have them but we got backloaders in for fuel and they sure looked well for the time, we was mainly Bristol, Leyland and AEC with a couple of BMC’s i think to keep the big hammer gang in work horrible things forever over the pit.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Jimmy M,Mc Kinnons were part of the Tayforth Group.

Hello robert, do you get many wagons stopping at Crawford, like in the old times.

hiya,
Ah Crawford one of my favourite stopping places in years gone by lovely place very friendly people, i think drivers in my time where well looked after and in return the stopping drivers helped the economy, i think i must have put a few bob into brewery shares over the years in fact was on first name terms with one publican in the 60s.
thanks harry long retired,

I stopped at the Heathergyll 3 nights a week for years, when Billy and Sandra had it and after. They moved north and took a pub in Stonehaven I believe.Derek who had the cafe/caravan site, was an ex Master at Arms in the Navy. We still keep in touch but he’s sold up and retired to Morecambe now. A lot of Tolsons, Wheetabix and Mfi drivers used to stay there. I was up there the night of the Lockerbie disaster. I was working for S&R Tankers at the time. One of our shunters, Tom, lived in the village. His wife worked at Heathergyll, his daughter at the cafe. Had a lot of good nights and met some great lads there. Like you said the locals were a very friendly lot.

Not so many lorries now Norman mostly at Heathergylle some at Crawford Arms.Counted about 20 the other night. In the seventies there could be as many as 70 to 90.The M74 killed most of the trade.

Hi Yorkshireman, the locals are still friendly although a lot of them are not really locals. What was Toms surname.Re-Derek Hadfield. Most of the people in the village would swing for him as he sold the caravan site to travelling people and they cause a bit of trouble during the summer months.Billy and Sandra are now retired and the last time I spoke to him they were living at Kinghorn in Fife.

found this on net guys. it’s from Darvel which was a lace town and every year they had a lace queen. this a short film showing the celebrations. in one very short scene you see a driver reversing lorry with ■■■ in mouth. im sure thats my uncle jimmy who went onto mcKinnons. www.ssa.uk/film.cfm?fid=1547 or just google Darvel lace queen. i’m sure you old lads will find it of interest especially harry.

sorry boys link wont work. buggering thing. :imp: :arrow_right:

aye just google darvel lace queen and you’ll get it lads. aye them god squad are a right bunch. I like a drink at the weekend but I don’t go round THEIR houses knocking on their doors and telling them they should go out and get ■■■■■■ :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I know Derek had a lot of trouble selling the site, I didn’t know he’d sold it to travellers. I can’t just remember Toms second name. I hope Billy and Sandra are enjoying their retirement. Sandra used to play the guitar very well, and I seem to recall their son was musical too, he played erm, let me see now it couldn’t have been the Bagpipes there’s nowt musical abaht them, no I think it was the piano accordion. Anyway if you speak to them again give them my best wishes, tell them both to have a dram on me. I’ll pay for it next time I go past.

I think in my time on Bulwarks, I stopped in every place in Crawford that had a bed, as you say Robert there was quite a few lorries stop there, if you had not booked in, you had a job to get one, when Crawford hotel had no room, they used to phone around, and slept in a private house and twice went back to the hotel for breakfast. stopped at the cafe south of the villiage, but continued to eat there when we had sleeper cabs, I loved Scotland and never refused a load to go there, in 1978 I done 120 trips up there, and volenteered to go to Belfast when only a handful would venture there to the falls road to the Brewery, oh happy days.

Hi yorkshireman,I must be going senile the Tom were talking about was Tom Miller,I left the area in 1984 and just moved back in 2004 so I never knew Tom had worked with S@R.Sadly Tom died 4years ago at the age of sixty. He was working with R Taylor @Sons at Lesmahagow and was changing tyres on his car in the yard.He stopped for a cup of tea and collapsed with a clot to the heart. Two weeks before along with our wives we were at a Burns supper in the village hall and Tom was complaining of a sore leg but he never went to the doctor. Were still friendly with Christine his wife and I do small jobs about the house for her as Tom never let her do anything like that.Tom worked with me at Millars many years ago also Stewart Cameron of Dymen and Patersons of Aberdeen. He was a good driver and worked like a horse.

Norman,Iwas wondering if you and Harry have been doing a bit of moonlighting as I read in last weeks Dumfries paper that two trailers loaded with whisky had been stolen from Curries yards.Knowing Harrys fondness for the golden nectar I thought he might have roped you in to take the second trailer in case the first one didn’t last long.Reading some of your posts I often wonder if the two of you are indulging.
