hiya,
B****y H**l Norm first class driver and poitician to boot i know nowt about politics and long may it remain that way, was the shop steward once at a place i toiled at, and met more glassbacks when it came to the crunch though, talk about them making bullets for me fire was’nt in it, usually got a “thorny one” to fire at the management when they was all out of the yard that was the private sector, in the BRS yard union business was only carried out when all the members and all BRS staff had to be members, was present, and i bet i get some flack for this post, but could’nt care less.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, you won’t from me, I was one at Carlsberg, went on a course at Birmingham, I have a diploma from a college hanging around somewhere in the loft room, the old management did not like it when you could talk on there level!
hiya,
Thanks for that vote of confidence Norm, but you know me pal i won’t be happy unless i get somebody’s back up.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry you are a politician, you are plying for votes
hiya,
You know i’m not Norm, i would’nt want to be in the same building as those fiddling lot, what with the recent disgraceful expenses carry on, the lot of them should be sacked we would have been if we had robbed and plundered the system as did that lot, they would’nt get my vote even if i was threatened with prison for not going to the polls, two fingers to the lot of them.

hiya,
Cracking pic again Chris, if there’s still any wagon and drag men left from the old days who tell you they’ve always backed the trailer in the proper way and never had to adopt the nose end method on the odd occasion i’m afraid i will very much doubt what they say but there are “better men than i am Gunga Din”.PS Chris will be sending you a PM later bit of info required.
thanks harry long retired.
Howay there Wor Harry, I served my time withwho I believe was the best waggon and trailer driver in the UK —Eric Postlethwaite of Brady’s of Barrow . There was only one place we had to "nose"into — Metal Box Breeze Lane Liverpool and the first time I uncoupled I nearly lost a finger there was that much screw on the turntable !! Another time in the Abbey at Margam one of the slingers bet me 10/- that we would have to put it on the “nose” at this particular bay — my response-- your on Taffy !! Anyway in goes the trailer no danger !!.When I plucked up the courage to tell Eric I got a bollocking for not taking £2 off Taff and sharing it !! (10/- &£2 was worth a bit more in 66/67 .Another time we picked up a ships crank case on Liverpool Dock ----a Pickfords Scamell/4-in-line low loader was there for the crank . We were in first with them behind but oh what a laugh when both motors had to reverse 300 yds. back up the dock !! Eric had to pull forward 3 or 4 times every time Pickfords got dog knotted !! We were comming back out of Barrow (loaded) when the Picfords were only on their way in to Vickers to tip !! We could have put both pieces on the waggon and trailer no problem !! Regards Bewick P.S. I am a Makem by Birth !
When I was at Pickfords there was several drivers who could reverse two trailers into position to pick up a load when the back one was in place they would pull the pin and move forward with the other one and they would often reverse into the yard in Sheffield as it was usually very tight in there. I did try it myself but I was never able to reverse two but one was no problem. Johnnie
Norman Ingram:
Bewick, comments on that subject, I think it was a publicity gimmick, to pacify sections of the public on getting lorries off of the roads, I can remember in the late70’s into the 80’s when it was hard for transport firms, due to the high interest rates, but a certain firm grew and grew, for he was in with a religious group who he could borrow money at a much lower rate, this was good for him, others could not compete, he gave land so they could build a church, and the colours are the same■■?
Hi Norm Im hear again re. Stobart yes they were/are Methoddy’s and did support their local place of worship but did not borrow from them . However there was somthing funny happened as I recall when in short order a warehouse they had built to hold Bibles and other religeous publications went up in flames and then shortly after their depot flooded it was hilarious all they needed was a plague of locusts to have the full wrath of God Almighty !!!When you refer to him growing & growing don’t be fooled ----- everything that glitters was not always Gold !! Regards Bewick .

hiya,
Bewick there you go best wagon and drag driver in the UK and there was “only one place we had to nose into” there you go i was correct that’s not never.
thanks harry long retired.
Here you are Harry, treat yourself to a bit of power steering and take mine tonight,I’ll have one off.
You won’t have a trailer lad to whip though, and watch yer speed as it’s a bit faster than a BRS ■■■■■■■■■.
hiya,
Aw shucks Chris you are spoiling me now, can’t promise it’ll be that clean tomorrow i’m crap with a duster a la BRS, but i’ll try not to scratch it.
thanks harry long retired.
Chris now you are talking, I like nice clean wagons, not like Harry, he will not go to sleep at nights, if he don’t have a bit of oil or grease on his hands.
Hi boys
Chris you are spoiling Harry you even left it in a large yard so he could brush up he reversing skills while there is no one about, woulden’t want him to get embrassed
He might brake the habit of a lifetime and use the bunk, well he will not need the space to put his ropes in with that setup
Regards Keith.
Well maybe I’m spoiling him and I know he likes company so what about one of these,Studebaker or Hippo complete with missile and transporter.Norman could be second man in the cab whilst you Keith and you Dave can be the rear steerers. You will have headphones and be able to speak to Harry, maybe give him some abuse to keep him on his toes.Don’t scrape the missile for god’s sake as it’s only just been flown in from the States.
Let me know if you want the job, could be anywhere in East Anglia,Lincolnshire or Yorks East Riding.
Warheads will come later .
If Harry doesn’t fancy the job he can take this Scania on nights. The Transconti has gone unfortunately .
I’ll have another shift off. He’ll have to fetch it from Woodhead though
Hi boys
Chris, Rear steerer indeed I hope your not sugesting Dave and myself are on the wrong bus Could I be the scout in that series 1 ? by the way I think that Scania could be to quick for Harry hope it’s got a limiter.
Regards Keith.

Need good lads on t’back end Keith, doesn’t matter about clattering the Yank or Hippo as long as the missile is kept safe
That Scania bag - of -sh** 82M had one of those push-button limiters I think Keith, where you could select a speed range.I think it was called Econocruise or summat. It was a big drop from that Transconti down to that piece of Swedish underpowered rubbish. All I can say it was a lot more manouverable than the Ford and a lot handier when reversing the drag.■■■■■■■ and Fuller for me every time .
hiya,
Chris still think i can find Woodhead and without the aid of sat-nav, nearest i ever got to the Scania 82 was the 80 and i hated that with a vengeance after having to surrender my 220 ■■■■■■■ engined Atki borderer which was a better tool altogether certainly at 32 ton gross.
thanks harry long retired.

■■■■■■■ maybe sometimes but the very few/one which I ever drove in a Marathon seemed to have a horrible power delivery all at the bottom end and nothing much after?.I always compared it to Detroits and most other engines in the big DAF’s etc as being all smoke and no go.I also drove an old T45 once with the,I think AEC based TL11/12 motor in it and that made the ■■■■■■■ in the Marathon seem a bit of a joke to me.Why anyone would choose a ■■■■■■■ over that engine beats me?.

You lads are a fussy lot, anything with more than two rubber bands, it steers easy, and has brakes to stop, and you can keep it clean, next you will want it rocket propelled, and computor controlled.
