hiya,
Chris, have done Johore Bahru which is just over the causeway from Singapore to Alor Star which is a kick in backside from the Thailand border so a bit jaunt round India would be no problem at least they do drive on the proper side of the road, when do i go??.
thanks harry long retired.
That’s a blast from the past Harry,Johore Bahru,up the Bukit Timah Road out of Singapore, across the causeway.I did a couple of trips from Changi to Mersing but never got any further up,not even Penang.
You can go when you are ready, don’t forget Norman at Northants traffic lights and bring me a Bengal tiger back,Douglas harbour wants ratting.
Hi Harry,
You would have to cut the Tigers tail off to send him to the IOM. Don’t think the Manx Cat would be to happy with one of those around.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Never got to Penang when in the forces in the fifties, but the old lady and me did Malaya about twelve years ago had a very pleasant eight days there at that time, little bit of time in Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands,Penang and finished up in Singapore for a few days before flying home from your old haunt Changi airport which i visited a couple of times in the fifties for mail and supplies when getting a bit of jungle instruction at Nee Soon transit camp before going over the causeway and up to the Cameron Highlands,I think we referred to the Singapore airport site as RAF Changi in those days.Chris bet you glugged a few bottles of Tiger when over there, i know i’ve had a few canny hangovers with the stuff.
thanks harry long retired.
I was at RAF Changi from 1964-1966 Harry and used to go to Nee Soon barracks for Army Wireless set batteries on exchange, which were sent out to North Borneo.
hiya,
Chris, was at Nee Soon early 1955 I was on the advance party from Korea my first Far East posting, did about six weeks there until the rest of the regiment came over from Korea, i don’t think i was sober for the time i was there, drew some savings i had and blew the lot, very happy days.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry, you will have to behave when we go to India, no alcohol, but I make a jolley good cup of roseylea, and sausage rolls, I will make small ones for you, for I know you cannot eat a lot. Lets get going before Chris changes his mind again, that yard at Swansea looks too dusty for my chest.
hiya,
Have had several jars and several scotches in what was called Colombo thats as near dammit to India, got off a troopship on the way out and on the way back for a leg stretch/ p##s-up.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry stop dreaming, you cannot do now, what you did when you was in your 20’s, so be a good boy and stick to tea, if you are very good, I will let you have a drop in your tea, and will not tell your wife, I am off to pick up my darling wife, who is babysitting for my daughter, catch all of you later, bye bye for now.
Hi lads still in the middle of wife sitting, my mate has had his opperation, still in hospital, may come out next week, I think it has sunk in , that he will not be mobile, and able to look after himself for two to three weeks , let alone be able to take care of his wife, so he asked his sandman buddy Norman to stay on and help, but he has no Sky TV, and no laptop, so when he comes out, I wiill check if I can use his broadband with my laptop, today we popped in our home to check it is ok, so I thought I would check up on you scallywags, specially Harry ha ha ha, behave yourselves while I am away. Sandman Norman
Hi Norman,
We need you back on here to help Harry with the jobs that Chris has lined up. I think you and your wife are doing an admirable job, taking care of your mates wife. I’m sure it must be a relief for him to know she is in good hands.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Hope Chris can find me summat for Amsterdam, sorted myself a backload just a bit of summat to pay the diesel outbound it’s only about 20 miles driving for me to my hotel over there 10 miles to North Shields from my place and about the same at the other side port to hotel.
thanks harry long retired.
hiya,
Nice pic Nigelhunt, very rare to see a nice straight non rusty BRS motor, mine never looked as well as that but have driven older motors than that one.
thanks harry long retired.
That’s a nice old picture nigel.I’m not very good with BRS depot codes but the wagon is registered in Burton-on Trent (FA).Maybe the vessels are for one of the brewerys. They have been knocked up in Workington,Distington Engineering.
Harry and Norman could manage that old Maudsley between 'em.

hiya,
Chris, borrowed an old Octopus will pick Norm up at Northampton traffic lights and i’ve got loads of rope, but the old codger will have to drive when we get over the water not capable of continental driving but will come into my own when we hit Asia, bet the submerged rig will need an oil change when we get her on dry land, wil have to use the OPS 6 in the Bangalore depot for a cash handout to get us back home and maybe a return load to pay for the diesel.
thanks harry long retired,
Hi boys, found this site a while back and I must say I really enjoy hearing about the old days in BRS.
Was the OPS 6 the weekly sheet that you had to present to get cash if away from home base? If I remember correctly the Trampers in Edinburgh got £6 to cover them if doing runs to the likes of Pompey or the Smoke, that would be about 1969.
A packet of ■■■■ is about all £6 would get you nowadays!
I worked in BRS in Edinburgh, Seafield Road (BV), between 1968 and 1976 in the Traffic Office and in those days BRS had it all, traffic wise. Edinburgh in those days was buzzing as it was a City full of breweries, whisky bonds, printers and both light and heavy engineering companies. When the ABC licensing went out the window, private enterprise began to make its’ presence felt and it was a slow decline from being the No 1 haulier to a bit part player with local outfits like Dobson and Russell coming to the fore.
The old depot in Seafield Road was long ago taken over by Allied Carpets who in turn are also in financial difficulties.
Hi Jack,
Lets have some of your tales. Harry and Norman are not around at the moment,so a few of your stories would give them a surprise when they come back. Good to have you on the thread.
Cheers Dave.
Harry and Norman, being old BRS men were part of the British Transport Commision - lion over wheel - so they can get off to Hertford and help their BTC pals out - British Railways,Eastern Region.Just drag it out and re-rail it,that’s all there is to it.
I’ll pay 'em a night out.
I’d go meself but my eyes aren’t far enough apart to be an engine driver.
By the way, welcome to the forum Jack.I remember Russells and Wm Dobson well, the latter running tankers out of Forth Chemicals or BP as it was eventually called.
