hiya, looks canny that chris could have tramped with something like that, maybe long distance on the isle of wight. thanks harry long retired.
British railway at castle station, they had 50/100 of them to do the delivery’s , this was in the 50’s, even got a lift out of town, when hitchhiking back to norton manor camp taunton, this was 1955, then pick up a lorry at weedon going to bristol. they were very good to turn in a tight radius, never saw a driver reverse in one of those■■?, a bit different to the gate change ones they had in the army, the big "Scammell’s ". You’d be ok over here Harry, tramping with that.No tacho crap on the IOM,just work sheets apparantly. Two fingers up to the EEC from the Irish Sea.
hiya, tramped round the IOM on a motorbike in the early 50s not as a racer i hasten to add but at TT time made it go as hard as i could though, lovely part of the world. would have to use the bus pass to get round there now, time we showed two fingers to europe as well. thanks harry long retired.
Harry, you do dis-appoint me, I thought you was alias G. Duke, sliding through dingle dell, climbing up towards the mountain. Yes I was a biker, I had a Matchless 500 in 1958, I gave my misses a lift, then in 1962, 7th July, I got married. Sandman Norman
hiya, so norm you had to have a motor bike to get a bird, i did it by just being georgeous. thanks harry long retired.
I got married in 1962 as well and had to get rid of this Norton ES2 to pay for a bit of a honeymoon.
Things you did for women.
Cemex 8-legger DAFs would get round the TT circuit as fast as a 500 Matchless Norman nowadays.
hiya, bit of a dago there chris, i’m like quasimodo compared but been married three times, bit of a bad risk do you think, hitched first time in 1957, then bachelor again in 1962 had another go 1968 lasted three weeks bachelor again till 1973 stuck with that one, and what thats got to do with the BRS i haven’t a clue, but i’m not alone, driving and not being home are shaky foundations for marriage, lots of lads i know have had more than one go but i got it right in the end, i’m going to blame the old red and rust for not letting me come home, can’t have been all my fault, could it? . thanks harry long retired.
Hi All
Selling your bike to get married Chris wasnt my game , love me love my bike had this one in 1965 when I married and still have a 900 Yamaha now but no Misses , got shot after 30 yrs Harry , one
s enough , Motorbikes forever .
British rail used to have rakes of these Scarabs and we would be sent down to BR at Southampton Terminus for MT cable drums and the Scarabs would shunt our trailers , the things could go right round in a jackknife and seemed to come up from under the trailer the other side .
Cracking photo of a BRS depot in action Dieseldog6 does`nt the sight of that make you misty eyed Norm.
Regards Frenchy
Chris Webb:
The Isle of Man Steam Packet used summat like the Scarab years ago,I’m not sure what make this is though.
I always fancied a go with one as well Harry.
That’s a great picture of Coventry BRS Dieseldog by the way.
They were built by Reliant at Tamworth , can’t remember the model though.
Bless my cotton socks, Frenchy & Chris had motorbikes, I sold mine in 1964, because my wife was pregnant again, and ended up with a Ford thames van. When I took my wife to hospital to have my first son, on the back of my matchless, he is crazy about bikes, his first bike was a un-restricted fizzer 50cc, then he had a 250cc honda, then a guzzi, and a sucsuci (jap), now he had a top of the range BMW, and he has ridden all over europe, one time he went to Saint richard circuit in France with his old honda and a bath, with a fitted shower, the chaos they had trying to make it roadworthy, they turned it over, when going around bends, him and his mate Richard, were sad because they couldn’t fix it, then they ask me, “Tow IN” I replied, set that, and your bath or sidecar will be stable, next they were over the moon, they had sorted it out ■■?. They had been to this circuit manytimes, and was well known, but when they turned up in this 25 years old honda and a bath sidecar, and had a shower, they made the “Motorbike News”, and well over a thousand took photo’s, from several countries. He is now over 46, and still has the passion, he has done the Lands end to John O’ groats several times with each of his bikes, but not the Fizzer. Hope I have not bored you with my tales, but you see my son has had his adventures as well, and blames me for his passion for bikes, when I took my wife, with baby Paul inside her, to the hospital. hiya, tell you what fella’s it’s no wonder the brs and other places i’ve worked always tried to move me onto night trunk, it was all the firms had handsome lads working for them and me being an ugly git wanted me out of sight so not to frighten the customers, but me mam said i was lovely, i think she told lies as well. thanks harry long retired.
Harry, one Rhino is attractive to another Rhino, I never liked nights, Nights are for Owls, Prostitutes, and Policemen, but not for me, when I was force to do them for a time on Carlsberg, I would pull up and have a kip, when I got back late, I would tell them I was tired, I cannot get my natural sleep during the day, soon got it changed to people who prefered nights. Chris
hiya, done a few like that and using a bog standard trailer chris, i’m only starting if i can have a muscle bound trailer lad couldn’t pull an oldie like that round corners on my own, don’t bother about the start tomorrow i feel knackered just thinking about it , my licence is expired anyway thanks for the offer though i’ll keep you in mind, but don’t ring me i’ll ring you. thanks harry long retired.
Jings! How does that work then - has it got a secret fifth wheel on the wagon or is it just like some kind of giant rigid?
It would take a bolder man than me
hiya, got it in one mac d a detachable swivel just positioned for that particular job and like you say the old girl bacame an eight legged artic afterwards the turntable was removed and then she went back to being an ordinary motor usually pulling a drawbar, quite a stable method of pulling long stuff, give me my boots boilersuit and cap i’ve got the urge to be off. thanks harry long retired.
Cheers Harry. Had me scratching my head…
