I’ve never read a bigger load of Bollox than these previous posts,I know there were always a load of Cowboys and idiots that operated within the industry (no doubt there still are) but it looks like a good few of them have posted on this site.Reading some of this crap would have you wondering how on earth the Road Transport industry managed to operate in those far off years,do me favour ! Cheers Bewick.
Especially when Santa’s horses bolted and zb’d off when they saw the fully freighted 40 foot trailer they were about to be coupled up to using a drawbar dolly.

It operated within (and beyond) its perameters at the time, still does. Those perameters have just changed, thats all.
I miss those cold winter mornings, arrived at the yard an hour early in the dark loosened me warwicks and adjusted them for tightness, had a brew and checked the oil and water topping up if required. Spent ten minutes trying to get the radio that hadnt ever uttered a tune to work and warmed the engine thoroughly in a vane attempt to get the heater to work[it never ever did.] tootled off for another five days with a fold down bunk and a diif that whined like a banshee, I hated that Roadtrain!

Yes bring back the old days when tippers went across rough ground without getting stuck due to crappy auto-boxes, no ABS warning lights or “drive off gear too high” messages, no sign in with security just to tip some sand.
Oh and no pointless courses like Epic and Safed…
It was all bout freezing your ■■■■■■■■ off in winter and roasting them in summer. getting callouses on yer hand ontop of the already one’s, waking up 3 hours fore they went to kip ,handballin 20 tons of cotton, kippin on a plank across the seats , not getting a proper wash for days on end, takin 2 days to get from newcastle to the smoke
or in the real world then
Getting to work early for a brew an chinwag with your mates (fellow workers cos thats what we was ,mates)
get a lift to sort the load and sheet it
getting tips/advice when you was new to the game (also getting ribbed but that was part of the fun)
askin people when such a firm was when you got near
parkin up at night and enjoying the chat and a few bevvies with other drivers
helping each other out whenever needed or not
getting respect from your peers when you did a good job
no h&s/dcpc/adr etc, and yes there were accidents etc but basicly we all helped each other wether it be loading/directions/breakdowns whatever, yesterdays driver never passed another driver who was in any sort of difficulties without offering a helping hand.
today it’s sadly a case of
i’m alright jack
not my job
i don’t know you etc etc
No night heater, ropes and sheets 280bhp at 38tonne, lazy bone idle dockers and crane drivers, in fact anywhere you went they were bone idle with few exceptions, hours queuing to tip, filthy stinking and sweaty.
**** that, air con ,auto, Ipod, big cab, big engine. Nice and clean, uniform shiny shoes “cushty”.!!!
the old days havn’t gone.
it’s simple, don’t send a CV, don’t ring up, just turn up.
knock on the door, and say “i heard you’re looking for a driver”.
they may say “have you sent in a CV”?
you will then say “No, but i’ve got something better, ME”
Back in the late 80’s I used to do a lot of Scotch runs and obviously no cruise control or limiter then and used to run at spot on 100 kph which is about 62 mph I suppose.
Ever since those days I can keep a constant speed on the motorway easy now and don’t even use cruise control on my car only in the lorry.
