Brexit , borders and lorries

cav551:
There is one massive positive coming out of this which we as drivers should be shouting about to ensure that they are kept and improved for our benefit. The two Lorry Parks just off J10 a of the M20… and for that matter those being created elsewhere.

We have been complaining for years about inadequate parking facilities and now we are seeing these constructed in exactly the right place. When Brexit is done and things settle down we need to ensure that these new parking areas become what is so desperately needed: overnight/weekend parking areas with hotel accommodation exclusively taylored for lorry drivers, food and leisure outlets and possibly fuel and repair facilities on site.

We?

The drivers have no voice as it is, and couldn’t stick together at gunpoint.

The big UK hauliers won’t push for it as they already have depot networks, and reduced tramping.

That leaves the small and medium sized hauliers to push for it, get parliament to listen and implement it.

.

Your right there Darkside…if they had years ago you’d now be the best paid workers in the country…drivers are more powerful than they realise, certainlly more than politician, the police or the military…try to imagine a one or two week strike and the stand still it would create…
I think it was Keele university that did a “green paper” way back in the early seventies on the subject, first shortages of fuel, food, factories not being supplies and shut, product supplies to water and power facilities stopped , riots on the streets, and in the end, breakdown of law and order, followed by anarchy …id imagine a pay rise, decent facilities and working conditions would be settled way before the second week took effect…still, a pipe dream, as you said, they just couldn’t stick together…

Media bias fact check? Wth, the federal immigration MP when questioned stated there is going to be a free movement of people , not interested in the EU, as there will be no FM of people from the EU to Aus, as for fresh food, flights from Perth are 17 hours direct so are cargo planes , 23 hours straight from Sydney , and prob closer from Brisbane … shows your ignorance, there is a lot in common between the uK and Australia , still a governor who reports to the queen, som legal cases still can be heard in the London high courts, the laws are virtually the same. Even the NSW flag has the st George on it. Loads of items are moved in the worl,d it’s a global world the EU are not the be all and end all … quote as many outlets as you like I will believe federal MP when I hear it out of his mouth over any fact check site… the post was truck drivers could well be allowed to freely move to Australia with no visa requirements after brexit.

Seriously?

Yes, the federal MP, for immigration was on sky news, saying as part of the trade talks, it’s likely free movement of people from the UK and vice versa can work in each other’s countries visa free, ie free movement. There was rumours it could be as soon as 1st of jan 2021 we have had minus immigration this year due to covid … so nice to get more brits here … will it happen who knows, but good for drivers wanting experiences.

Not sure if it is relevant, due to brexit, it was on sky news here in Australia, that there may free movement of people between uk and here, thus truck drivers will be able to come work here visa free and vice versa.

If you have a Class one, here in NSW, you auto get a Class 2 and then take a test for class 1 [HC] and no medical etc, then if you want to drive B Doubles you sit a [MC] test and have a medical, no digital tachometer, good old fashioned log book,

Might be of interest to some and after 4 years you can apply for citizenship.

First round of trade negotiations started in July I think.
I guess anything is possible at this stage? Free movement of labour? Absolute ban on movement of labour?
Given the scale if trade would the Aussies offer such a prize? The UK is Aus’s 7th largest trade partner, we aren’t that important to them.
Aus is trying to get a closer deal with the EU whilst we are preparing for a worse one!
uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUKKBN26Q0N5
UK to Aus currently trades £18billion and that could increase by £900m.
The UK trades £675 billion with the EU.
A trade deal with Aus would be nice, but it isn’t worth much to either side.
Easier movement of labour? The Aussies are more likely to offer that to a bigger more important trade partner, surely? The EU trade about £111billion with Aus.
Isn’t it more likely the EU would get at least as favourable a deal as the UK?
.
As an aside I wouldn’t trust Sky News Aus too much. A different beast to Sky News UK.

I think, I have to trust Sky New Australia, when I am sitting on my couch and minister for immigration states, we are looking at free trade and free movement with the UK…

I think I would rather trust our news then biased uk news, living in Australia, and now a citizen.

DafT here in Australia are welcoming a trade agreement and our PM Scott Morrison is not moving heaven and earth to get a trade deal with the EU indeed Australia seem are not keen on the EU.

we are looking at the canzuk agreement which means the UK get an invite into the TPP agreement here in Oceania…

Might well be 7th largest, but that’s under EU rules not under the UK and our rules. More to trade than just cheap EU tat from EU countries. … plenty of fresh fruits, meats , sugar, allot, iron , minerals etc … that some you only find here like mines in northern QLD wiepa etc.

It’s, a fact that the UK and Australia have more in common then either do with the EU, I’m anti EU … and our trade minister and immigration minister has not ruled out free movement of British passport holders to come and live and work freely in Australia, personally I hope FM won’t happen …

dfat.gov.au/trade/agreement … ons/aukfta

Australia & the USA imports are going to get slapped with a ‘Border carbon tax’ as the EU have stated that imported emissions from countries who are not aligned with the Paris accord agreement (USA) or haven’t got a net zero pledge in place by 2050 (AUS) are 70% higher than domestic emissions & are putting EU/UK companies at a disadvantage as they are having to de-carbonise their businesses.

Brexit Job Bonus.
bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-54810373
More jobs for officials and inspectors.
More jobs for builders.
More jobs for office workers producing the 30 million declarations needed.
So, the public get to pay more for bureaucrats, and they get to slow traffic, which means transport costs increases, to pass on to the public.
The new facilities including a new warehouse with 6 loading bays, “may not be ready by Jan 1st” according to officials…No kidding…
Temporary arrangements will be made to provide accommodation for the importation of unicorns under the shelter of custom built rainbow sheds. No mention yet of extra warehousing required for the pots of gold we will all receive soon.

Is this news to you Luke?

Government is unprepared for Brexit and hiding from facts in a “bunker mentality”.
Not enough capacity in computer systems. Not enough customs workers. Not enough buildings and infrastructure.
And it’s not just the Jan 1st deadline, (set by Johnson) but the June 2021 date that we won’t be ready for either.
.
But on the bright side of Brexit…

…ummm…

Ed.
That isn’t no opinion piece, it’s the NAO, the non political National Audit Office giving that report.

Jesus Luke you need to read it all!!

A few Brexiteers on here listed all the benefits and improvements the working man will get after we are out. Another told us of the cracking trade deals that we have in the bag, and a new user from the Board of BMW actually admitted that they needed us more than we needed them.

I have certainly changed my opinion on it and I apologise for the last years of me being a snowflake remainer federalist commie lefty.

Biden won the election in the US.
Orange muppet is finaly out, altough he might be trublesome for the next 75 days.
That special relationship US-UK trade deal is looking better by the day.
Lets hope Biden, when he was vice-president under Obama, forgot what Obama said about Britain if voting for Brexit is going to find itself at back of the que.
Biden is very much pro Ireland, won’t allow to hurt the country of his ancestors.
Has even a all smiling picture with IRA boss Gerry Adams.
The UK better be good to Biden.
Oh, and lets hope the EU hasn’t noticed the significant shift of power in it’s favour in the White House

The irony being that no deal will damage Ireland more than anyone else, at the outset the EU said it would pay for any damage done to Ireland’s economy by BREXIT, wonder if they’ll keep their word

Well personally I’m glad that it’s finally over, I did wonder just hoe long two 70 year old men could maintain an election!

Daresay youre right. NoDeal Brexit is a no win for everyone, but Eire stands to be a big looser. Biden has lots on his to-do list, and Eire and the UK wont be at the top.
I don`t think we would have been in a better position with Trump, to be honest, his loyalties were to money and power, nowt else.

!

Japan Trade Deal Gains.
Seems Johnson has a student in the art of Pinocchioing in Liz Truss.
The historic new trade deal has won gains for the UK in tariffs on bird eggs, hides, furs, ultra strong spirits. All of which would be good…If we actually exported them to Japan.
The claimed £15 billion boost to the UK is compared with having no deal with Japan, not with the existing deal we have as members of the EU.

Is it over? the media didn’t have and still don’t yet have the authority to declare who had won an election fairly and squarely.

I wouldn’t be getting too excited about comrade Biden, sorry, Harris, leading the great charge into socialist utopia just yet.

It does appear that this time the Electoral College is with Biden, and so is the popular vote. Last time Trump won although Clinton had more votes. This time there is currently over a 4 million gap in Bidens favour. Article here by NYT about the vote and the system, and its history. Interesting read whatever your leanings.

Don’t bank on it, they have to negotiate the film rights yet, and then they might do a sequel. Look how many rockys there was. Haha
