Hi ,All
It’s one thing to blow a load off when you have a tank with a donkey engine powering the blower, that way you can put the tacho on break and switch off.It still doesn’t make it legal and if VOSA see this happening ,they will feel your collar.
If you have a PTO powered blower even though you have put the tacho on break Vosa can tell from downloading your tacho that the truck has been doing other work. In this case I am referring to Digi Tacho’s
Like a previous poster said ,some firms are fitted with trackers and the company can tell from these what’s happening, generally there is no problems BUT if something went wrong ,whose head is on the chopping block?
Cheers Bassman
What he said, especially the bit I’ve highlighted. Anyone at our place who tips off the card is on a disciplinary.
same here , tip off the card by all means but it IS traceable , why take the risk ?
Unless you are a real trucker like Phil , who thinks doing anything by the book in the haulage industry is for wimps
Ok, I’ll bite.
How?
What does the tacho record that shows your PTO is engaged and the engine running?

Yes it does, go to vehicle printouts then n-profiles, select date then it will give you a printout of how long the engine has been running for at certain rpms. I dont really understand it but i think if vosa were keen to get you they’d be able to tally it all up. Its another way you can get caught out when using a magnet because the speedo doesnt work but the rev counter still does.

According to that printout, my truck was idling for over 10hrs yesterday…it doesn’t register one reading above 234 revs!
Not sure they will be able to prove anything with that!
jaydee:
It takes a special sort of idiot to tip tankers whilst he is on break.
They have to be costantly monitored, pressure, flow, quantity, elevation, pots (belly tanks) etc.
Every product and site blowing different.
Do things ever go wrong ? ■■■■ right they do, with dire consequences.
Be it tank exploding (ask Scruffy), Valves leaking, pipes splitting (own or custermer), even tops or filter boxs blowing off tops of silos and many, many more.
Have done probably 15 or so years blowing powder, liquid and slurry tanks, so been there and seen the consequences of unatended tanks.
Do you think your company will back you up when the sh-t hits the fan, whilst your tacho was on break ?
Even with a paper tacho, the stylus still vibrates slightly when the engine is running: forensic examination can detect this (although a roadside check can’t).
As stated, if you did burst a pipe or whatever and you were taking a break, you could expect to be the centre of a veritable sh storm.

Mine records it, its abit difficult to understand but you will find it shows rpm. To add though im not against tipping on break and will do it if im in a rush but not getting into doing it day in day out again.
When I’ve tipped at various Asda RDCs it’s never been an issue 'cos the lazy ■■■■■ take forever and by the time you’ve done queuing you’ve already had two 45s and a good kip!

Volvo had something like 5 or 7 different thickness other work traces on paper charts, I can’t remember now exactly, but stuff like engine running, revs etc.
And I’m sure I’ve read somewhere official, a drivers hours thing that gives an example of a tanker loading / unloading as other work, but I could be wrong!

.
Our company uses vehicle diagnostics to monitor every aspect of what our trucks are doing , everything , revs , gear changes , braking the lot . It also shows when the pto is engaged and it doesn’t take an idiot long to compare a time on a tacho that is showing break , to a computer readout of a truck using it’s pto at work
It’s been used as evidence of misuse of tacho in discipinary hearings where I work .
To answer the question …
Yes it is illegal to record a break while discharging a tanker & the driver must be in attendance at all times whilst engaged, but most do of course (take a break) and of course the company’s are aware of this.
Mind you should something go wrong & you are not there to attend/rectify the issue …
In different words that is what I said in an earlier post. Drivers take breaks whilst doing what is technically “other work”, 99% of the time there is no problem with doing that cos a blind eye is turned , but no Gaffer, large company or small,is going to back you up if anything goes wrong, it would be tantamount to encouraging you to break the law.
So , I’m sorry but you , the driver ,if you do it and the proverbial hits the fan will be the one who get’s his collar felt. I know that the majority of us at some time or another have took the chance and done it , but that is what it is --a chance and sooner or later the odds go against you .
