Not sure how true it is, but, before all the big brother cameras & dash cams, back in the good old days, late 80s/90s a guy I used to know reckoned he went through with a fridge trailer & in his mirrors he saw all the fluorescent lights exploding as he passed !
Think he might have been just a tad over the height limit. Lols.
Like you say, they get a bit Mardie if you try to enter the tunnel now in anything over 13ft. (I wonder why ?)
Downtons gigas can go thru but they are on low profile tyres I’m sure the ones they have on standard tyres don’t fit
Back in the early 90’s we always shot through with our globetrotters and fridges behind just dropped the air on the back of the unit a touch as you went towards the arch and crack on. As for matey hitting the lights he’d have taken the corner off his trailer on the tunnel roof first,as the lights are,and indeed always have been, at the highest point.
It was the hanging clangers you had to watch out for with a 13:5mtr fridge behind you as you have to swing a bit wide on the bends.
