Hi Chris,
Spoke to Tom regarding HTE 920K and he tells me it was not one of his motors, mores the pity, as it would have made a great addition to ‘Life after Riding’s’ section on the web site.
Regards Paul

Hello Paul
Thanks very much for the update!
I had it firmly lodged in my ageing brain, that I’d seen a photo of it in Riding colours, but obviously not!

10In the late 1960’s Tony Brierley was starting his driving career with J. Ironfield from Clayton le Moors. I was a student at the time and my Uncle was Harry Haworth, TM at Ironfields and I worked a few summers there as second man and in the warehouse.
One of my jobs was to bum a lift off one of the drivers to Liverpool and meet up with a couple of six wheelers bringing tea chests up from London into Morris & Jones (Mace) on Wood Street and help them unload onto a lift contraption, bloody hard work.
Harry Haworth was the father of Stuart Haworth, founder of CSH Transport.
I last saw Tony Brierley about 20 years ago when I had become an OD, I am now retired and Tony was a few years older than me but I suspect he may still be involved
I was with Tony yesterday he called in at the yard ,He is still a OD

Good to hear that he is still active, he is a top man, when you see him again pass on my regards…if he remembers me■■?
Ask him if he remembers the time we were coming back from Liverpool in a Bedford TM(think it was an artic) when he had hurt his left arm and I had to operate the gear stick.
I have now retired from driving but am still in business with my son who subs for a well known ex Blackburn haulier now based in Bamber Bridge and have been for the last 12 years.
Jack Walker - Walker steel, had a decent fleet in the 70s, I remember they had a depot in Coalville leics as well ! Always remember seeing their red white and blue ERFs with the Union Jack on the bumpers !
Also when I used to go into McCaws soft drinks at nelson in the early 90s there was always a Loves ERF on shunt, between nelson & rishon ! Before McCaws built the all singing And dancing place they have now !

Does any one remember 2 brothers from Great Harwood who each ran Leyland units they had literally built themselves out of all sorts of scrap that came out of "Motors " ? They subcontracted occasionally out of Leyland Road Services & amazed me with their mechanical knowledge of all things Leyland Motors !! Sadly I can’t for the life of me remember their names !!
In about Jan/Feb '68 there were a couple of Lads, mates they were, from out of Lancashire not sure exactly where but somewhere between Blackpool and Blackburn well they each had a tipper working on building the M6 between Killington and Shap. One of them had this old medium to long wheelbase four wheel Trader so this particular Friday afternoon they went home to where ever.On the Monday morning lo and behold this Lad turns up in his old Trader but it was now a twin steer, they had converted it over the weekend !!
Obviously this was before Plating and testing started, and it must have been a right bloody pig running on the haul roads,I don’t know what the outcome was though.Cheers Bewick.
Hi, nice selection of pics, good to see some of the old vehicles these companies used to run.
240 Gardner:
Haven’t seen one of Hoyle & Dean’s green motors for a while, but they are somewhere in Accrington, I think
AFAIK they are still going, spoke to one of their guys on the phone some months ago…
Ref Bowker Transport, can’t be 100% but I’m sure I saw a Bowker car transporter recently…though I don’t know if they offer this as a contract to customer as they preasumably transport cars between the car dealers they own (some swish brands too! BMW, Harley Davidson, think the one at Salmesbury is a Maserati agent!!)
Anyone know what TRS was? Used to see one of their’s parked in a driveway leading to a huge house, not sure if they still owned it though or if it had been sold and left with the livery on.
Don’t know enough to start talking about this but as far as I know the Bowker is same family
somewhere, Gardner 240 will know for sure. Hoyle & Dean are still going but not in Blackburn.
TRS was Tower Road Services.

I think that the Bowker transporter would be transferring cars between their own dealerships, although I’m not certain of that. They have BMW & MINI in both Preston and Blackburn, plus used car dealerships and, as you say, the old Bay Horse Garage (formerly SAAB) at Osbaldeston is now a Maserati agency. There is also a joint venture company called Bowker Contract Hire, as well as used car showrooms in, I think, Preston and Blackburn. NOt to mention Harley Davidson & Buell! That side of the business has come on a long way since they bought Clock Garage in Accrington in 1984.
TRS was, as David says, Tower Road Services. The same livery used to be applied to vehicles with the name Andrew Donelan, and who I think may have been the man behind TRS. Donelan used to operate a fine Atkinson 4-wheeler, VBV 434R, ex-Walsh & Dearden’s own fleet, and now in preservation somewhere.
Ah yes, just googled Andrew Donelan - thought I’d heard the name before, he owns the garden centre that is now at the huge house I mentioned earlier - last thing I heard he was requesting planning permission for some wind turbines! Talk about a career change
A TRS ERF in later life

I don’t notice Gilbraith`s TS Ltd recently in the news by being taken over by Pollock/Scotrans .Ah, but I mentioned P & G Fogarty, which was the basis for Gilbraith Transtore
You learn something new every day , many thanks 240 Gardner .
My pleasure! Fogarty’s was the family business of Carl Fogarty, the motorcycle racer, and who lived in Tockholes as I recall. It was they who first set up that rail terminal (in the late 80s, I think). It was later acquired by Gilbraith Transport (not Tankers) from Accrington and who, by then, had dwindled to a very small operation from the large business it had once been.
Were Gilbraith Transport & Gilbraith Tankers different companies?
