Best way to Whitehaven

I have just looked at the map you linked to and see the bit after Grasmere on the A591 needs a permit. That’s what we had when we delivered the chemics to the water treatment plant, it was 15 years ago when I last went so the ban has been on for a longish time.
The treatment plant was right in the middle of the permit required section on the hill and unless you knew it was there you wouldn’t find it. It was hidden in the banking under the road and the bit that was visible looked like a farmhouse.

Bet that took a few attempts to find, especially as there was no sat navs (postcode’s are pretty damned usefull) and very few mobile phones.

An x on the map after you’ve been there once eh?

It was a good drop once you found it, the plant man always made you a brew and toast while the tanker pumped off. I think he was glad of the company for a while.

Only problem with the job was the traffic in summer touring the lake district, as you can see by the photo it was a blind exit from the plant. Even so it was much better in all respects from going South. I worked out of ICI Runcorn for many years and never went South of there. All my work was, ■■■■■■■■ Lancashire, Northumberland or Scotland. Even as far as Dounray power station, first time was in a Scammell Highwayman.

Would I go back on the road if I had the chance, NO way, things are so much different now.
