Jake whether it be driving or any other skill in life people often think they know it all and therefore refuse to take criticism and learn, when actually most people have room for improvement with just about anything they do. It’s a weakness to admit that though isn’t it so a BS front is put on.
As a driving god I obviously have no faults, maybe a few bad habits but chuck an assessor in the cab with me and I could cover up most of them for a few hours and come out looking good

You might fool a company driving assessor with that but sit an advanced pursuit trained police driving instructor in with you and I’m sure he or she would point plenty of points for improvement for you. Unless of course your a trained pursuit driver and your at that standard of driving yourself.

Ex international fridge driver I’ve pursued plenty of ferries and deadlines and caught most of them

well there you go then, I agree you’ve nothing you could learn

Just wondering, as you claim to spend so much time in Holland since you ‘retired’ why do you care so much?
I know that when i retire finally after my 6 month extension to my working life I will not give a monkeys what anyone else does!Couldnt you take up fridge repairs or do a bit of consultation work instead of worrying so much about other peoples driving…jeez.
I care for several reasons. As somone who worked in the transport industry all my life I hate seeing the way things are going and the appalling standards.
Everytime I come back to the UK which seems to be less and less I drive from the south coast or Hull up to the north of Scotland and back and I can’t believe some of the things I see on the roads.
I care because innocent people are killed and injured daily and nobody seems to be doing anything about it. There are a few other reasons but I am sure you are not that interested.
Why fridge repairs■■? I have plenty to keep myself busy and that does not include work of any sort ever again.

Advanced driving groups are volunteers giving up their time. You could also say why would anyone do that. The reason is because they care and want to try and do anything they can to improve driving standards and make the roads safer as a result. Who likes hearing about serious injury and death on the road that could have been avoided. Can’t blame anyone for caring.
Well stich up saturday, knocked a 13 and a half hour shift out. Thought well I’ll read a bit on trucknet, now I’m home. Well until I read the first few posts of this thread, I have changed my mind
Juddian I feel you kind of agree with me in a sense. The fact standards are so poor and the training does not seem to help. You are correct in a way but it’s not always the fault of the trainers.
They are doing their job although sometimes not very well depending on if they have been properly trained and qualified. It’s easy for someone on the outside looking in to put blame on the training but look at all the good drivers there have been over the years. It worked for them. Its probably more down to attitudes and lack of willing to learn further than the training that there are so many bad drivers about these days. I feel you like RR are a little harsh on young drivers. There are some really good ones out there and it ain’t their fault trucks are easier to drive and technology is moving on.
There are certainly a lot of old timers need a lesson or two.
First suggestion, tell the new driver to forget that utter cobblers mantra ‘‘brakes to slow gears to go’’ and get back some vehicle control.
Regarding the above sentence I would be very surprised if any properly qualified LGV instructor would teach that method because the only time I have heard of that being used is during car training.
Although with mostly autos now it is not relevant
Who told you about that Juddian? Maybe young Ben83 could enlighten us on how he was taught if it was not an auto■■?

Sadly I learnt on auto’s [emoji20]
Main reason, cost.
If I’d have had the money I’d have taken 2 weeks minimum learning then done test with a manual, as I don’t like autos full stop.
Way too much complacency for my liking, I like my brain being kept active with cog swapping, not day dreaming, autos to me make me feel Ive not got me dog on a leash…
I’d love to find a firm who would let me learn properly in manuals, I’ve drove ickle bits of boxes when a lad with me dad, but let’s be honest manuals are near dead in any form of vehicle now which to me is a big reason the standards of driving in general in all categories have fallen,
it’s now foot to floor, it drives you, saves you, directs you, tosses you off…
It’s the only bit of driving I’m not feeling, BUT needs must I wanna drive a truck so I’m ■■■■ it up like a good buttercup [emoji106]

I forgot about autonomous vehicles…but dont you have to have a Doctorate to advise on that sort of thing DD ?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
i was awarded several doctorates and several phd titles in various fields but as it would have meant travelling the world and relocating sometimes briefly to places like dubai and new zealand ( who would want to do that)? then i thanked them for their interest in me and declined so unfortunately i dont, hence i just leave it to trampy and whoever else name he thinks up to inform us the error of our ways and how the world should work.
i only drive part time as ive other interests and even then only when its a flat out mega pay job that needs doing from the right company and the right truck. ( if you take a mental picture of similar plant to woody the people smugglers piece of kit then your not far from the mark.) that way it keeps things interesting
Agreed.
And I’d make the test progressvly harder.

Definitely, but does it apply to all who have sat the easy one?
I just love it when people add comments to your thread and then ignore you when you ask them a question.
Is that ignorance, arrogance or pure snobbery■■?

Presume that’s aimed at me, sadly i don’t spend every waking moment glued to the PC and have only just seen your answer to my post, sorry if i didn’t snap to attention quickly enough for your royal effervescence
You mention that GTGBTS is no longer relevant with auto’s, nothing could be further from the truth.
Almost every modern auto lorry has a function that the vehicle will select ever lower gears and whatever retarder is fitted will stay on until either the throttle is touched, or the retarder/auto exhaust brake function is clicked off, you can assist the vehicle in it’s auto braking by applying the footbrake, but the vehicle has been designed in such a way that auxilliary braking can be used solely to slow the vehicle, we all know too few drivers actually put this into practice, it’s foot to the floor on the accelerator till the very last second then hard braking to counteract.
The programming on some of these systems leaves much to be desired in its auto mode (as usual Volvo got the auto gearbox right and also the auxilliaty braking), so for those who want to drive lorries as lorries and not cars, it’s simple enough to select M and to drop the gears yourself to keep the engine in the right band for maximum retardation, you obviously temper this to road conditions especially if empty, or locking of the drive axle is likely.
Far as i’m concerned the auxilliary brake as in exhauster/retarder/Jacob (or whatever name they give to their licenced Jacob copy) is my primary brake, that gets used all the time for slowing up, if you’ve timed your approaches well the footbrake should only be needed to bring the vehicle to a final halt.
Purely out of interest i use retarder right down to and including 7th gear on a 12 speed autobox by manual selection, below 7th unless you are just creeping along in traffic the force on the back of the gears feels too high if you drop from 7th to 6th with retarder operating so counter productive in my humble, obviously if you’re creeping along at 1100 rpm in 6th at whatever speed in heavy traffic, then its fine to use the retarder to help maintain that speed without touching the brakes.
Bleedin’ MAN…
Bounces around all over the place when using the retarder/Jake/exhauster. I cog in down to 9th occaisionally 8th and let it run down on that and then leave the autobox to do the rest.
Like Juddian say’s, the footbrake is for the last ten yards if needed at all.
Gimme a Volvo any day for going down mountains with.

Fair enough, I apologise but I thought you were just ignoring me. I understand where you are coming from with auto boxes although my experience with them is quite limited. I have driven a few here and there but the last proper truck I drove was a MAN auto and I regularily changed the gears manually but not always. I was also a big fan of exhaust brakes.
