[attachment=0]mack 13.jpg but strangely enough 15 forward gears as the "hidden " gear " above low position in high range can be split as well.and usable . Mack 12 spd has no “lo” position. funilly enough boss says no one elsr wants to drive a Mack box…just bloody immigrants. near as strange as the Mack 11 spd with lo lo in mixer in avatar but has a lot more than 11 gear ratios to use…aaahhhhh. the bottom one says mack 6+2 but iirc its a 5+3

I love getting in a old POS from time to time and 90% of them are manual DAFs with the odd Iveco thrown in.
They can be fun to drive but I def wouldn’t want to drive them daily.
I even have an automatic car now. Yep its not as fun to drive but I can hold a coffee or have a smoke without worrying about changing gear. I thought Americans were insane/hated driving due to 99% of their cars being autos but they are def on to something.

The same. I have had manuals all of my life up to a couple of years ago. Felt weird at first, like not being in propper control until I got the hang of putting in D and forgeting about it. Now when I drive a stick, it feels like too much effort and the forgetting leads to stalling at junctions and the like. Maybe its a getting older thing.
For me, the ease of use has to be the dog leg Scania 10 speed box, then joint second would be the ZF 16 that you would push/pull in the neutral gate for high/lo and the Mercedes powerliner 2, especially in the 1948.
Never really got on with the 13 speed Fuller as it wasnt very forgiving on the big big pulls around europe.
By far the worst goes to MAN for the 4 speed tri-split thingy. It was allways guess work as which position it should be in when slowing down and got it wrong 99% of the time.
Mean And Nasty was a name well earned.
Where I work now they have a 1994 Daf unit with a fuller box…I don’t enjoy it.

You’re maybe a bit like me mate, I was the same last time I had a one.
I brought a manual back over for a week a few years ago, while mine was getting some repairs done, and I done exactly the same.
Basically I could not be arsed as I had just got used to Autos and the easiness
As I said, I had nothing to prove, in terms of handling a truck, and actually ‘‘driving’’ it in the TRUE sense which many have never experienced…(Not been clever there btw, just stating facts, and no fault of their own to the lads who haven’t)
In those ‘‘keen wide eyed’’ days I would not have had an auto chucked at me,…not Macho Trucker enough.
So minimal interest that week, and I was well past the ‘‘Look at me in my big truck’’ stage, and the showing off that goes with it.
Some never get past that, some like to think they are driving Gods, some think that everybody envies their spotlights and crap, some think that others are orgasmic when the V8 they drive is sounding like a ERF with a knackered exhaust.
Others are like me (and possiblly you ) miserable bastds with all the enthusiasm been knocked out of them, just going through the motions,.and enjoying the ease of auto boxes…

There was one driving through Taunton serv last week,.all blinged up to the ■■■■■■■■ in tat, hitting max revs for extra effect.
I watched the driver as I was walking back with my Maccy’s coffee, his head was like it was on a swivel looking around to see who was watching him full length of the services.
Btw can you still get those Scania V8s specced as manuals or heavy haulage?

That would be around the right time for them, on a ‘M’ plate.
A mate of mine had one (reputed to be first in UK) he ran it for Curries on Euro.
Poor lad died young, and it sat in a fridge firm’s yard in ■■■■■■■ on the side of the 76 for a long time until it was sold.
Metallic blue, with stacks up the back, David Sisson (aka Desperate Dan) , anybody remember it at that time?

Do you not enjoy farm deliveries rob? I know what your saying with going through the motions and all that, but the areas you work I would be in my elements, I love Devon and Cornwall for driving. I used to drive down those areas for Keedwell occasionally, I used to volunteer for it every time it came up. Your a lucky guy in my opinion rob.

Yeh, tbf I do enjoy that part of the job in comparison to other crap like rdc.s etc etc.
I do p.i.t.a. general on a Tues am to Wed pm, then leave on Wed evening with up to 10/12 drops on within the radius of Wilts, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, I can look at my notes and plan around where I’m parking for a couple of decent nights out.
I’m left to my own devices and not hassled, re.load Fri evening, run my driving time out, and back home Sat noon ish until the following Tuesday…job sorted and sussed.
Would be a bit better if on as good a rate as I once was, but you can’t have everything your own way.
Still miss the European, but this is a good second best.
So yeh, I’ve sorted myself out a good little number with a long weekend. …not by accident btw.
Maybe the ‘‘Going through the motions’’ crack was an exaggeration, …just winding up (or trying to ) a couple on here on a quiet Sunday morning.

RHD, M reg so actually a 1995, couldn’t tell you anything about the engine. All I know is I can’t down shift without crunching the gears rotten. It’s just a day cab 4x2, has a nice eminox stacker , I was nice enough to give it a clean inside and out before it got it’s tacho calibrated and a new MOT a couple of weeks ago just in case it goes down the road.

I may be young (in comparison) but driving manual now holds no interest for me. I feel more comfortable behind the wheel of an auto than I do in a manual. I have two cars, one 2017 E-Class from Mercedes where you can’t get anything but either the 7 speed auto or the new 9 speed auto from ZF. My other car is a manual Honda Type R. When driving the Type R, I can’t shake the feeling that this would be a much better experience with a DSG system. The gear changes would be lightning fast as would the launch.

Yes, not sure on the new shape ones though.
My old 560 had a gearstick and a pipe, great fun for posing round Rungis and Boulogne and annoying old crabbit barstewards
No stick in the current one, pipe coming soon though.
