Well then could you please explain why they don’t even have driverless trams or trains when this mode is on its own track and they can’t even do it for that

There’s nothing for him to explain because your point is moot. The Docklands Light Railway has been driving itself for nearly 30 years. Maybe you’re not as smart as you think you are.

This came up in another thread a while back. Automation really works well when it runs on its own protected system. It’s not so good at being retro fitted into environments that are open to pretty random situations. The current road system is massively open to external factors. It’s a bigger challenge than appears on first glance. It’s more likely a redesign of the main road system will take place eventually to facilitate automation. It’s then automation will appear safer. Only because you’ve designed a system to baby it’s weaknesses. Insterting automated cars onto the current system will end in mishaps and shortcomings. There’ll always be compromises “oh it can’t do this track leading to that farm up on those welsh hills because the surface is terrible and there’s a really humped bridge you have to drive over at just the right angle” etc etc.

But you’re pointing at one of the strengths of a “good” auto system.
That awkward bridge?
Every new driver has to learn it. Some will ace it. Some will scrape it.
An integrated auto system can learn that manoeuvre and ALL vehicles will then have that knowledge. All following will get it right first time.
And we’re starting to move into AI not hard wired pre programmed systems. We’re not there now, but this is the way it’s going.

True, but the LDR runs on its own dedicated track. In a simple loop.

No it doesn’t.

Ok. Pedant hat on. Where does it connect to, and interact with, the mainline?

Ok I’m not as smart but i was referring to high speed trains and city trams if it is a way forward then they sure are taking a long time 30 years wow

Down to public confidence, carrying passengers is a risky business. Carrying goods is a different matter. A pallet of toilet rolls doesn’t have an opinion but people would not be happy or confident in being carried without a driver.

People are happy to use the DLR.
The reason autonomous vehicles, or trains, are not widespread, is not because of public acceptance, but because it is still to difficult to make autonomous vehicles integrate with the wider, random and somewhat unpredictable world.

It is public perception as a factor too. Would you be happy to sit in the back of a car with no driver? I know I wouldn’t

Would you be willing to share a motorway with vehicles that have no driver? What’s the difference?

Ha UK t, this is going to confuse some because I disagree with you on that point however when and not if trains etc do become autonomous after the first few use them the sheep will soon follow.

Anyway back to the point of discussion…to summarise the thread…About 6 lorry drivers say it will never happen.Must be right then. :unamused: Another 6 say it will happen but not soon and the ones more in the know say it will happen for sure.
As I have said right from the start it will happen and a lot faster than most seem to think. The technology is far ahead of what the general public get to hear but hey ho just keep pretending and it will go away and never happen.

Yada yada…

You can not have a civilized discussion without becoming condescending can you?

Even when he’s talking to himself

Works both ways fella.

Glad you posted that and not me! Yeah Euro, its amazing how fast the technology for autonomy is moving.
I am off to NZ at the end of this month where some of the latest adaptions are being tested.
Anyway I dare not say anymore or I will be accused of all sorts!

Your no more going to new Zealand than you are a driver your probably a driver’s mate
Long may we have know alls like yourself on here it breaks the day up having to read your tripe I wouldn’t miss it
Yourself and your buddies are great entertainment

Glad you are entertained but I hate to burst your bubble because I am off to NZ and I could not give two hoots whether you or anyone else on here believes me or not.

So knowing NZ fairly well having lived there, tell us where you are going and give us some info of the place, the sort of thing you don’t find in a book and take a picture of yourself stood on one leg touching your head somewhere recognisable , that way it’s total proof .( most people don’t stand on one leg touching their head for a pic) go on we dare you.

I might just do that. You have just put a great idea in my head to prove the doubters wrong.

Dr Damon:

I wouldn’t bother Dr as I tried that and I still get called by the non believers. You can’t fix stupid.

Dr Damon:

Works both ways fella.

Calling me condescending is like calling yourself reasoned and civil
Unlike you, I am participating in the debates about automation with my current knowledge and understanding, giving my opinion. I have not told those who hold an opposing view that they are stupid, ill informed, nor am I constantly alluding that I know more than others, implying that others are to stupid to understand the level at which you’re involved.

Yes fella and I was more than willing to participate in the debates but since joining this forum and because of the subject I was insulted and told I knew nothing and that I was a troll hence I am saying very little. I have noticed others getting the same treatment as well for silly reasons.
If you care to look back I will always respond with honesty and sincerity to the ones that give me the impression they are serious but mostly I am greeted with clowns who are not capable of a discussion and only capable of insults.
You know the other silly thing the fact I called myself Dr D made a big difference to the response I got but my reason was because my initials are D.R.D.
Nothing stranger than folk.

Any sign of intelligence and your immediately branded a troll. Anyone agrees with you and you are a sock puppet, Agree more than once on different subjects and then you have multiple accounts, and so forth and so forth. If we had to send photocopies of our licences to the admins as proof we are who we say we are, then that would amount to about a couple of dozen of us that are left on here who are actually drivers, the ones who stamp their feet the loudest on here and simply insult and disbelieve everything you say are actually the ones who have never set foot in a truck.

You can’t fix stupid.

Nail on head . UK tramp.
