As a foreigner, with a little bit of road and restaurant knowledge of the languages, Portuguese is much more sibilant in sounds. Not the lisping accent of Spani…whoops Castilliano ! Say Espanol or Spanish in Pays Basko or Catalonia and you will might well get told off.
Some words are similar to other Latin base words and some different to me anyway..
And from the Brazilian soaps that were on the TV in some restaurants it seems that Brazilian Portuguese is different to the original. They say the Spanish gracias instead of the Portuguese obrigado or obrigada.
Allegedly Basque is the oldest language in Europe. According to someone from there I know, anyway.
Bacalhou is possibly the Portuguese national dish. Cod caught off Iceland. Dried and salted. They reckon there are 365 different ways of cooking it.
