Buntine was involved with that, not so much a company as an association, mainly concerned with transport north from the Alice in those days before the railway went right the way through to Darwin. I remember Co-Ord road trains refueling at our depot bringing 2nd hand railway lines from the Nullabor for the new railway. 3 completely flat trailers in each train with overhangs of rails at both ends. As they drove in and around our yard to get to the pumps and exit, the rail ends fouled each other as they turned with a steady clanking sound as they did so.
RHD and indicators right means itâs probably genuine (rather than a Vauxhall pastiche)
Them Aussies donât mess about!
A kick at the ghoulies ![]()
Very good ^^^ I see what you did there ![]()

@pv83 They still exist but I I believe they have withdrawn fromroad transport, heavy haulage and crane hire. They still operate globally as Chep (Commonwealth Equipment Handling Pool).
@buzzer earlier days,Buzzer.
Didnât they own Econofreight at one point? I remember them in Sydney when I trudged the length of that road in Alexandria where all the transport companies had their yards, looking for a job. The only offer I got was from that OD sitting in his Oshkosh sadly putting off his impending trip to Melbourne. I declined. ![]()
I am not impressed with that roping job, nothing to stop the top layer flying forward in a sudden stop. Perhaps he knew he could never go fast enough to encourage one. ![]()
More likely, he didnât have enough brake for a sudden stop. ![]()
Looking at the two photos Buzzer and yourself posted i noticed or it certainly looks like they have banded the rows together. The top row looks like its all held as one.Did they use the old type ratchets on the back which were common place here a few years back where you could put two rope over the top from front to back and ratchet them down?
@ramone i very much doubt they had ratchets back then. Either the reliable old Truckieâs hitch or a windlass, maybe.
Itâs all a bit before my time.
@parkroyal2100 I still donât recall ever seeing one in the flesh.
The narrow-cabbed day cab version too! Local shunter perhaps. It doesnât state what engine or gearbox it has.
It has a 13 speed RoadRanger and a hub reduction diff.if that helps determine which motor. It also seems to be a Marathon ll.
