OK,I was parked a couple of trucks behind some one we know, seen here,in the queue at Habour to get into Iraq. Two days if memory serves!

Hullo Ian,
Could have been, but I thought he was always a Volvo man. I maybe wrong, both on Truck and Driver.
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Ian, how many “fixes” of earl grey did you have in that time. regards jamie.

Amazed you got a picture of him parked…

Not exactly a good photo for the Long haul Pioneers book. But then again it was not the last time that the big man would be held up. all the best Jamie.

I got a call one day form a guy I knew that had a motor dumped as the driver had botteled it. ( I assumed it was in Turkey or somewhere down that way ) I couldn’t do the job as I was doing something else, but passed on my mates name. The job was Greece via ferry, reload Istanbull and the truck was dumped at Reims by a first timer, I kicked my self after.

I also knew some Scottish drivers that wouldn’t go past Shap.

Jeff

jelliot I’m scottish and my old man was m/e driver ,he used to do shap all the time just to get to his load for Baghdad,Oman ,Saudi etc just like many other scots lads sounds like you’re a bit racist towards scots lads there ,did you ever drive an old Erf or foden up shap fully laden in winter time? or are u just an ignorant prick

Sorry don’t know why it’s just posted this bit again

My mistake on the caption for that last picture.
Directly in fron of the Astran is my mate Jimbo in his 111,and I am in front of him in my 142,we were both on for Expo Freight.
While in the queue,Jimbo thought it was time to catch up with his dhobi in the roadside stream.

Hi Ian, you still have not confirmed who was driving the Astran truck in the photo. regards Jamie.

Just slipped my mind…?

Then there was the time I used to keep this East German bird in my trailer box…

I always liked to live something like civilized while I was away.
To this end I built this kitchen unit that I used in the 142 and later in an F12.
In the 142,as well as the kitchen,I had a TV,(This was 40 years ago don’t forget),and a shower unit under the front radiator panel,No pics sorry).
Some one used to call me a “Poser” every time he saw me!,Hmmm, wonder who that was?OK so I was a poser!
It apears I’ve got the curtains pulled back, sorry,we didn’t have to hide behind curtains in those days, even when driving a Scania!

Now thats somthing!
You were realy early with somthing like that, ,nice to see!
Regards Danne from sweden.

I built one of those for my F7 out of a Chep pallet ( sanded and varnished ),then I had a series 1 Globetrotter that had a factory fitted one, which was quite a lot better. The sink used to drain onto the top of the radiator, when it was in for a service the fitter wanted to replace the radiator as he though it was leaking until I pointed out it was more likely to be Pea and Ham soup.
The Globetrotter had a paraffin primus style cooker which I had to pressurize by pumping the handle at the side. When I lit it the flame was about 3 feet high, so it got the heave and replaced with the old gas cooker out the F7. The sink had a window washer pump for the water supply, the whole thing was set up for sitting on the passenger set on a left ■■■■■■, as my Globbie was RHD so I had to get round the gear stick every time wanted to use it.
When I moved to artics I had a trailer box which was a better thing, unless it was raining or in the middle of Kaz in the winter.

Only pea and ham soup ■■

Being a fitter, and looking after a few of the early Trotters fitted with the standard Volvo set-up, there were far worse things than soup dregs deposited in those sinks. Think about an evening on the beer, waking up in the middle of the night with 15" of snow outside, get the idea ■■?

I used to extend the drainpipe from the sink down to the front axle level, so as none of the drainings would contact the rad’ / engine.

A couple of drivers come to mind, who although they denied any wrongdoing, rightly earnt the nickname of “Sinkpisser”.

I shall say no more…

Steve.

The Pea and Ham soup looked a bit of a mess as it had hardened with heat and time, and looked a bit like anti freeze. I believe what you mentioned was a common use, I’m saying nothing, but it didn’t have to be -15 nor a big night on the ■■■■. If you didn’t flush it used to stink the inside of the cab worse than curry so you always had to make sure there was always water in the bottle.

I got a really good gas cooker in Istanbul on the south side, it looked like and was about the size of a Baby Belling. It had 2 rings as well as a grill/oven and was real good on gas usage. Really good for making scones.

I had 2 big side lockers on my Italian fridge, one was a big kitchen pack with fridge, cooker, sink, storage drawers, and lights for night. The other side had all the stuff like chains, big hammer, crow bar, tools, spares, long wire rope, etc. I though it was the dogs bo…ks, but it didn’t have one of those East German bird things.

Well there you go,just got to get your prioritories right!

I got an Australian version but I installed it in the cab with me, now I live in a land down under…

Interesting reading re: keeping warm in extreme conditions, we all did it but we never considered the Carbonmonoxide Poisoning thing, today we get this hazard mentioned so much and we are well aware of it, makes you wonder how we survived, I never heard of anyone being a victim of CM poisoning - how did we get away with it ? Regards Fred :astonished:

A good mate if mine died of CM poisoning, Terry Crossland son of Trevor Crossland, Mill Field Horbury ( racing ERF ).
I met a guy in Greece that was running a Daf 95 in the mid 90’s, he was officially deaf 90 %. He lit his gas cooker in his F10 cab but the hose had been leaking, big bang, the shock wave burst his ear drums and also blew the wind screen out with loads of fire damage.

Cab heaters are great things, they’ve just got onto them here in the last few years. Yes it does get cold here, loads of snow about in the high country round about Victoria. Western NSW up high near Orange, Bathurst, and Dubo it gets bellow freezing in the winter.

I believe there was more than one case of CM poisening on the m/e run with drivers having their gas stove on at night, not all English guys, but I’m sure it happened.

I’ve heard a few tales of CM in cabs, a fire crew guy told me that the cab cookers burnt all the oxygen in the cab and all that was left was CM. I’ve heard other versions about the cooker going out in the middle of the night and the driver getting gassed that way. There was tale that a driver rolled over while sleeping and his bedding caught fire setting the rest of the cab up, but it seems like a bit of speculation. Not sure how forensics would work that one out.
A company I was driving for had a strict no cookers in the cab policy which was passed down by the insurance company.
3 of us sitting in an 143 in the middle of Kaz in the winter for the best part of all day with the cooker going for extra heat didn’t have any problems. I’m pretty sure that a 143 would be fairly air tight, at least as air tight as anything that came before it, perhaps we should still be driving Atki Borderers.

I recently see Kaz mentioned but hands up I cannot put a location to it - give me a clue. Fred
