Astran / Middle East Drivers

Fatbeerboy:
Is anyone still doing M/E or has it all died a death with all the troubles?

There are still a few old hands trundling up and down, not died a death at all, and will probably return stronger when they have to rebuild it all.

Is Gary Lyons still one of the ones still doing it? My dad sent his f12s out east with him probably 15/20yrs ago I was only a young in then we met him in his pub Manchester way and a man called Billy with a scar across his stomach. I remember being really impressed my dad old piles of scrap had made it that far!

That’s not any time soon then?

A friend of mine has just been head-hunted onto a railway line in Saudi Arabia. He will be project manager for the 2750km line running between Riyadh and the Jordanian border. The aim is to move aluminium and bauxite as well as passengers. There will be a hell of a lot of work to be done before it opens and with Intermodal yards along the way, there will be work for years to come I imagine.

Have a look at SAR or as it was known NSR.

My pal is looking for somewhere to live at the moment and is taking helicopter flying lessons.

Can’t say I recognise the name.
Surprising after all this time how many names crop up of firms who did m/e that you never heard of.

Crockett’s are coach operators now but there is an FH in the yard and still running in white livery.
Might be a new source of some photographs

There are many who only did the one trip, and many more who never even managed to complete one!

Hi rypie,
Welcome to the site.
First thing, please turn off your “Caps lock” so folks don’t get the idea you’re shouting.
I may well have known your dad, although I can’t place him this far down the line, have you any pics you can post?
With being based in North Staffordshire,I got to know quite a few local firms, local in this case meaning within a radius of 100 miles.
Like most m/e drivers on here,I knew many drivers by sight, but only a handfull by name, passing them in a layby or across the dining room in the “National” hotel for instance.
On Falcongate, the only guys I really knew were Tony Mizzen and “Shaky” George.
I went up to Birkenhead on one occasion for a job at Falcongate, but there was nothing doing at the time, probably just as well as as far as I know,Falcongate never had left hookers and by that time I preferred working for a firm that used left hookers.
Keep posting, and try and get some pics up.

Interesting point you raised there Ian about chaps that you meet across the table etc: you are so right, I have come across many names on the thread and they seem to ding a dong in the old memory box, but just recently I was delving into my archives and came across my old lorry phone book and I couldn’t put it down as there were so many names there of new and old muckers that one meets on the road and they had been mentioned on the thread on earlier stories etc: so these people who I did not recall are people that I had rubbed shoulders with and exchanged phone numbers with in the past, not a particularly exiting story but it took be back a bit and opened up a few memories, Regards to all - - Fred

Ian - interesting point you raised about people that you met on the road, when I have been reading posts a name crops up now and then and it seems to nudge the old memory but I cannot put a face to it or remember a situation but recently I was delving thru: the archives and came across my old lorry phone book and I couldn’t put it down - there were long forgotten names and firms and these people had been mentioned in stories and situations on the thread that I could not place but I had obviously rubbed shoulders with them and exchanged phone numbers, probably when you meet someone going homebound and ask him to get an ok message to the wife etc: when communications were few and far between in our job. not a particularly exiting story but it may prompt some of the lads to find their old phone books, as I found it very interesting. Regards to all. Fred

I did meet a few Falcongate drivers and I do recall a Roy, many of them were just faces that we recognised, the one who stuck in my memory was dear old Howard Hughes, a name that was easier to remember.

hi all,

did Falcongate ever have subbies that pulled Falcongates own trailers.

cheers

Go to http://www.abebooks.com and try searching for Cola Cowboys on there. I got a hardback copy in mint condition (with a transparent dust cover sleeve) for less than ÂŁ20 on there last year.

If you want an even better read, try searching for ‘Danger - Heavy Goods’. It’s the American title for the book ‘Juggernaut’ which (in my opinion) is a better book. Expect to pay less than £20 for a very good pre-owned copy. Mine was a first edition review copy that still had the review questionnaire in the front.

Thanks for the heads up, I bought a perfect first edition for $35
