Astran / Middle East Drivers

sundanceuk:
Does anybody Know who used to run a Scammell Crusader(s) in the early to mid 1970s that were as sort of muddy yellow in colour, I am sure They had “Iran - Iraq” on the front of the cab one either side of the radiator grill, Although I am sure thats what it said I would think that either of those countries wouldnt have been to pleased to see the other countries name on the front of the truck.
It would have been collecting a Flight Simulator in CKD form for the middle east.
We also used PlantHaul for Open TIR abnormal load work to Turkey/Middle east, but not sure if they actually sent there own tractor units with the trailer or subbed it out.
I worked for Redifon Simulation in Crawley.

Theres a Planthaul thread on this forum sundanceuk…

Good picture, Geoff.

I so remember that street with the train track. Because his official title was S.S.Sirisi Gerry Wheelan and I always refered to him as the Steam Ship Sirisi.

With the problems it would be good to know that the old so and so was OK. Top man!

David

That’s the first thing that came to my mind the first time I saw Sammi’s office,I thought it was a booking office for a cruise ship maybe?.
I will always remember,as we may have a picture of Her Majesty on our office wall,Sammi had a picture of Yasser Arafat.
And the big fridge full of Coke.
But what a great guy, what he couldn’t do for you just couldn’t be done,he was a friend to many of us and I hope things are OK for him.

Wishing everyone a happy easter

Great memories…Sammi Sirisi now that takes me back. (not as far back as some of the old gits on here…) I arrived at Ipsala with Terry Dines when on for Pan’s, destination somewhere… all going remarkably smoothly. Just some translation formality to finish then we’re off…whilst going through the manifest attatched to said carnet, Turkish interpreter miss understands “Agent exclusive…Sammi Sirisi” with “Agent explosive Sammi Sirisi” and we find ourselves with a military ■■■■■■ to Londra Camping and the small matter of a large fine and some expenses for an accompanied trip by a Turkish soldier… Great… something to do with dangerous goods…welcome to Turkey.
Every time you log on here, you find someone you worked with or did a trip with has passed on. I only remember people how they were… ( I know, a long time ago ) but we’re still all young at heart.

And I’ve bitched about the traffic tonight down the M3…Strap a pair on Mick methinks… :sunglasses:
Mick

As its Easter something slightly different.

This was at the Fuel stop on the edge of Ankara going towards Akseray. Like a lot of things in Turkey the Khazi wasn’t finished.
Nice old chap that ran the place, I always took him out a large pack of Typhoo as he liked English Çay.
The Khazi did have half a door but not enough to keep my wife and camera out.

Looking at my hands I must have been taking chains off or something similar.
Geoff
