En route to Baghdad…again, can’t remember where…0
any suggestions??

The architecture looks Hungarian, and I suppose that bowed tilt could point the same way

It was always Giresun for me when loading hazelnuts. One time in the summer months I decided to go the most direct route having travelled empty from Iran. Boy what a road over those hills/mountans arriving back down on the coast at Trabson. Normally when coming back from Iran it would entail going three sides of a rectangle to get to Giresun. All the way west to meet up with the road from Ankara to Samsun , up to Samsun and then along the coast road to Giresun.
Happy days!!

I may be wrong (Usually am) but when I first looked at that pic I wondered if it was Plsen and a little further on to the left is the brewery  Fred

Hi all.I may stand to be corrected, but as i remember the salt lake[Tuz Gölu]was between Ankara and Aksaray on the right hand side.Mike

The town on the opposite side of the road to Tuz Golu is Sereflikoçhisar

Hi all.I don’t know about Bernie having any accidents but i do know about a breakdown.I dropped a piston on theF89 roadtrain on Simons near Sivas.I rang to ask about repairs and was told ‘‘wait for a week,Bernie is leaving tomorrow and he will bring all the bits to fix it’’.After waiting 10days i phoned again to ask where my parts were and was told sheepishly '‘sorry Bernies broke down in Yugo with gearbox problems’'I got the parts after 3 weeks. The whole trip took 17 weeks :open_mouth:[on trip money] :frowning: Didn’t get rich that trip.
We used to load regularly from Ordu,Giresun,Smson and Trabson. They were good loads[if sometimes a little on the heavy side]. As Ron has said before we were paid a ‘‘bonus’’ for every extra ton so the roadtrain was always good for bonuses.
As David said the loading guys were great[hard workers]Except when there was an inter-town football match on as most of them were in the teams so loading was cancelled until after the match then they would load in the evening.Mike

Hi Mike, you raised an interesting point regarding the road train on Simons, I remember a chap who drove a R/T for Simons named Bob La’Conte (Spelling ? ) I mentioned this a while back on here but got no response, did you know him  Regards Fred

Hi Fred.I would like to say i knew him but i am not sure although the name is familiar.Simon’s had 2 roadtrains, both 3 axle F89s with 3 axle traileres which could be de-coupled to be tipped as short artics[in case of overweight ].The one i had was ex ‘‘Joe the Malt’’ if i remember correctly[it was 1975].They were brilliant tools for the time, both summer and winter for the ride and traction. The only problems with the roadtrains were if you had a breakdown you couldn’t swap trailers. When i dropped a piston, due to the repair time i had to go through all the rigmarole of having the customs re-start the carnets which cost time and money.Mike

Here’s another one en-route to Baghdad, sorry about the poor quality…

again, not entirely sure where, possibly Rumania?

Hi Pete. You seem to have a lot of blank spots on the trips. Is it just old age or were you on a ‘‘liquid diet’’ on the trips. Mike

It looks like it could be Turkey,if thats a Ford truck and is that a minaret

Hi Mike, If I remember correctly, ‘Liquid diets’ were the order of the day, or at least recommended!! The recent photo’s Ive put on here were taken by a collegue of mine, Rob Fowles, on our very first trip to Baghdad in 1980. I ended up doing about 10 trips, never bothered with a camera, wish I had after finding this site!! Some of the old hands mentioned or pictured on here, I’ve met, a lot I haven’t. I’m amazed at some of the contributors powers of recall of details, especially as it was over 30 years ago! A hell of a lot of efes and pivo and vin rouge have flowed under my bridges since then. Pete

You’re right Mike, it’s a D series Ford and that makes it Tonka land for sure!

David

Great powers of deduction…suppose you will tell me exacly where this is then?

Don’t know where it is but I was there!!

TIR Route, Bulgaria.

Dave.

As Dave says, could be Bulgaria, southern part of Yugo,or maybe even Greece.Give us a chance,it’s only Monday,we old’uns don’t come alive until about Wednesday.Keep em coming though it’s all good fun.

Mike

Roger Haywood

Hi Roger. You are more than welcome anytime.Let me know in time and i’ll polish the quad and put the beer on ice.Are you still planning[or have done]to buy a house here.Although its never a problem to find someone to put you up in Scandinavia.Take care.Mike

Hi Roger, this is a picture of Jimmy Myers, we were parked at, it was either Weidhaus or Furth im Wald, having just got back into Germany from Chek, you came through a little later and had a brew with us, Jim’s from Wigan and I’m from Crewe, but we were being childish and were talking with cockney accents, you asked " What part of London are you lads from?“, Jimmy replied in a cockney accent " Na-ah, Wigan”. Don’t for one minute think you’ll remember. Pete

I remember in the late 80s when i was working for Stolk Int B.V.I had just met the woman who was later to become my wife.We were coming back from Bagdad and tipping in the UK.In Dover i bumped into Roger Pierce and introduced him to my wife saying ‘‘this is Marie-claude,she is from Quebec’’.Being a pure Quebecois she spoke French[of a sort]and English as a second language.Roger was a typical 01er and i said look after marie while i go and help a couple of our Turkish drivers.‘‘Orlrite mate’’.When i came back later we took our leave and i said to Marie ‘‘that was nice to have a chat to Roger for you’’.She exclaimed,‘‘but i couldn’t understand anything he said,so i just smiled and nodded when it seemed appropriate’’.Mike.
