dAnorak, yes that s the one, when S. Williams was being dismembered all their equipment tractors trailers etc. was brought to Manchester for disposal that was from Dagenham Dock and their Birmingham depots . Its another story what happened to it all when the wolves and vultures ie. the then Springfield Transport hierarchy got their teeth and claws into it .There were a lot of LB 76s 110s Atkis AECs you name it. We got the Rolls Royce powered 110 from a scrap yard in Bolton 2500 quid less 650 quid px for an ex Hilton Transport bag of crap 220 ■■■■■■■ powered Mk 1Atki possibly the worst motor i ve ever driven , was I glad to see the back of that. To all the many Atki enthusiasts you have my sincere admiration and sympathy for putting up with such rubbish, however powered.S. Williams did operate a few of their Scanias on Middle East runs and Im sure there will be some of the old school who will remember them. Stay away from the gardner thread it s a futile discussion regards Crow.

I drove the bag of crap more than you did,it was an awful boneshaking ride, piece of wood on the accelerator pedal to stop your foot being bent into an arthric shape, terrible back to front ZF gearbox all in all a load of rubbish.I don’t why we(you) bought it.

Thanks Crow. There must hav been some resistance in Britain, to the foreign engines, for them to go to the trouble of fitting RR and ■■■■■■■ into Scanias, actually removing the original engine to do so. Was this because the GB-built ones were better in some way, or was it just because the fitters were more familiar with them (and had a shed full of secondhand parts)?

I guess the ultimate early '70s workhorse would be an LB110 with an 8LXB in it! Don’t give up on the Gardner thread; it’s going quite well at the moment. The lunacy seems to have abated a bit, since I adopted the tactic of directing concise, hectoring sarcasm at it (Pride before a fall, that probably was :stuck_out_tongue: ).

JAWS:
Steve you got it in one just south of the pass try google earth look for the camera Shipka Monument, I believe it is some thing to do with the Bulgarian & Russian war with Turkey 1878 I also think some thing to do with the Church near the bottom of the pass with the Russian domes and the Spire (Photo you have already posted)

Regards Ian

Hiya Ian, it’s good to hear from you again  , I hope that you and Filka are well.
I have just spent some time on Google Earth and it brought back a lot of memories of trying to get over there in the winter. I wonder how many of us spent a night in that big cobbled parking area near the top. I was fairly sure that the monument was next to the parking area although in the photo it looks like it is further up the hill and there were certainly no shops around for miles.

Take care, best regards Steve.

Anorak on an earlier thread i think it was Saviem who posted what would appear valid reasons why these conversions were done, some one else thought that one had been fitted with a Gardner i never heard about that, and it certainly would nt have been an 8 LXB or any other derivative. I don t see any point in even looking at the Gardner thread I ve never driven anything with one fitted and despite reams of mind boggling info still know nothing about them so no point in contributing any thing other than to take umbrage with CF over his jaundiced political views which is not the subject concerned, regards Crow.

I can remember one night trying to get up that hill, really heavy snow, I lost traction, Ritchie came past, he lost traction & started to slide back into me, fortunatley his trailer went into the ditch & stopped him dead.
Later that night the locals turned up with a Grader & dragged us all to the top, at the top, was a resto, guess where I spent the rest of the night.
Dave.

Anorak, you see what i mean its just degenerating into a slanging match between people who should know better. RIP Gardner, Regards Crow. This thread is much more informative and good fun recalling old times and places and real men.

I actually like the in-depth discussion of the behaviour of the lorry manufacturers of old (and the other stuff you mention, of course). I think that thesis that Solly found was fascinating, but the members of this forum have just as much to add on top of it. As for the troll, I’ll just keep sticking the boot in.

Hellow one and all, i wonder iff any body knew a chap with i beleive a nick name of “soudieGraham” please for give my awfull spelling, he lived, i think near Rugy, use to do a bit for the firm i worked for at the time, I beleive he had a ford transcontinental ? the saying went he had a accident on a mountain some were? and died in the accident, i ask because ive been reading this thread ? and very interesting it is too, thank you all for effort. ive long retired, and this and outherthreads help pass the time, Like you Mr crow -----gardner_____ say no more, although i had lorrys with Gardner engines in, cheers, trunker08
