Dave Poulton,Roger Haywood,Gordon Pierce,Peter Cannon, plus many more from Tony’s other interests including Motor racing and classic cars his freinds from his resturant and of course his love of sailing ,the list is getting smaller and smaller but thats life as time goes by ,R.I.P Tony

Why thank you kind sir! It was a lovely funeral, light hearted which is just what Tony wanted. Maureen (his widow) asked me to keep it that way with my speech and it seemed everyone who attended was in that frame of mind. Wake afterwards was really lovely with very tasty food and drink! RIP “fingers”.

Sorry Ash I left u out and sorry to Mr Haffenden as his name is Bob not John ,but thats what old age does to you

Looking at the pics on 166 and the Swedish Scania with the bumper pulled off if you back track to 145 you ll see that exactly the same happened to our Tony in Turkey ,he was rcovered by a Turkish army tank the driver of which used his brains and put a chain thru the front spring hangers and ergo back on the road. Where he got the tank from I know not ,maybe he had more influence than I gave himcredit for. Regards Crow.

Me and Roy Tatlock had been there all night, after the grader had pulled the bumper off.During the small hours two brits on their way home came over the hill,I can’t remember who they were now.The one in front saw my headlights and tried to stop, the wheels locked up on the ice and he jack-knifed and squashed the air-intake stack. We just unbolted it,threw it into the empty trailer and they went on their merry way.The Police had been round several times in the night wingeing about ‘you can’t park here’,Marlboro sorted that out.In the morning the police came back with a Turkish army officer who looked at the situation and said he would return with a winch.Later in the morning the winch arrived and the officer asked for money.I truthfully told him I was skint except for about 25 quid.OK I’ll take that he said (he could speak English). They hooked the winch up to the front axel and he put the claws down but as there was nowhere to anchor the machine to at front, despite the rear claws digging into the asphalt all he did was winch himself into me.I asked for my money back because they hadn’t completed the job.The officer said ‘well we tried’.‘Not good enough’ I complained.I pointed out to him that if my truck was a valuable piece of equipment and the enemy was advancing he would lose that equipment and all because they couldn’t get it out of the ditch. It must have wounded his pride because he left in a huff saying ‘I’ll be back’.2 hours later a tank came clanking over the hill with a full crew. The tank commander asked me for money,I told him (through the other officer) that I was skint. He said ‘well in that case we are not going to help you’.I just said get the 25 quid off the him(the other officer.)It didn’t work and after a lot of debate and haggle we agreed that I would pay him on the way back from Istanbul. They hooked up the tank with a chain to the spring hangers and pulled me out as easy as plucking an apple off a tree. The rest as they say is history.

Whilst you ve added a bit of military action to this thread Tony and to introduce a bit of levity and as you live in Holland go to youtube punch in Andre Prieu Alten Kameraden Maastrict 2009 its a rousing German military march nothing to do with this site but if you look carefully towards the end of the show you will see a bar advertising Crow Bier. Geoffrey,my brother,I have been to see Andre Rieu a few times,Galina really likes him.As for the Crow beer bruv, sorry to disappoint you (go to specsavers),that bar says Leeuw Bier, which in Dutch means Lion Beer.I like the music though.

Yes you re right Tony but as the video is not very clear at first it looks like Crow, any wayit s got you and me away from Gardner engines and I wonder how that very pretty girl over Andre s left shoulder would have got on with an 18 speed Fuller.Imean right shoulder.Am off to the Crusty Crab now catch you later.Another mistake its Rieu not Prieu.

Hullo GS Overland,
Gavin you mentioning Prague, I was there a few weeks ago and I wanted a photo of that low bridge that we all had to get under. I walked for ages trying to fathom out where it is. They must have demolished it, as the whole place is a maze of new roads, overpasses, underpasses, it’s a maze. I can remember we used to come South on that inner ring road ,then after getting under the bridge, just a bit further on turning left and going sort of back on yourself a bit before going up to join the Motorway. I searched and searched, I asked people, I tried to work it out on the Tourist map of the city all to no avail. I remember there was a Station off to the right as you got there. So in the end I gave it up as a bad job. Nothing to do with the Log Cabin I know. Sorry :frowning: :frowning:
Cheers, Archie.

I found the reference to the bridge in Prague interesting and also that there were no signs in the mid 70’s for TIR veh’s and on one occasion when I was getting a visa at the Czech Embassy in Bayswater road and as many of you may remember the elderly lady on the counter spoke perfect English so I raised a point about there being no thru: route signs in the city and adding that the low tram lines were of great concern and soon after that a few TIR signs started to appear ie yellow on blue
and I still wonder to this day if my comments prompted these signs (Could this be my claim to fame? ) Regards Fred
